Three Days of Thanks: Ask A Rapper

Categories: Ask a Rapper

The hip-hop world is a less than sensible place - lots of times, you're even required to clarify when bad means bad and when bad means good - so once a week we're going to get with a rapper and ask them to explain things. Something you always wanted to ask a rapper? Email introducingliston@gmail.com.

This Week's Subject:

The Ask A Rapper column is one of our favorites, but mostly for unseen reasons.

In March of 2008, we wrote a story about the Big Body Click, a collection of north side rappers that had floated along below the surface for what seemed like 1,000 years. The two guys we met with for an interview, Harole Wayne and Medicine Man, were goddamn delightful.

They were insightful and honest and funny; Medicine Man, in particular, was unbelievably hilarious. He told what remains to be the greatest story we've ever heard during an interview.

During the conversation, we somehow ended up on a line of questions about things that gangster rappers were and were not allowed to do (eat ice cream, have dental insurance, buy greeting cards, etc).

Harole Wayne, ever the opportunist (the guy literally crafted his own fragrance and sold it to gas stations by the box), offered an idea. There were lots of "fuck"s and "shit"s in there. Here's the cleaned up, paraphrased version:

There are a lot of misconceptions about rappers and rap and its surrounding culture. Perhaps you should take some time and try and write them. The Press should do a thing where each week you all talk to a rapper about things, have them answer questions about this or that. It could be good.

The conversation danced around for a bit longer (did you know you're actually NOT supposed to hold a gun sideways when you shoot, regardless of how cool it looks), and every bit of it was entertaining. But that night was the genesis of the AAR column.

Praise be to most high; Big Body Click.
