UPDATED: Music Editor Chris Gray is Holding His Own

UPDATE:On Monday afternoon, Chris Gray's dad said his son has his eyes open, is responsive to sounds and has moved around. It is still too early to determine what all has happened to him, however, because doctors still can't tell how much the lingering effects of the heavy medication he received while he was in an induced coma are affecting Chris. The family is taking turns sitting with Chris while he's in the hospital. Doctors are continuing to wean Chris off the machines, his dad said, and hope to finish that in the next day or so.

Further update: Chris's mom says he's off the respirator! And his cat scan came back normal. "He's still pretty goofy," from all the sedation she said, but his doctors think he'll make a 100 percent recovery from the heart attack. Biggest news: Chris will have to quit smoking and his mom asked us to spread the word: "No one should send Chris cigarettes!"

As many of you know, Houston Press Music Editor Chris Gray suffered an apparent heart attack Friday morning and since then has been hospitalized.

His father said this morning that they really appreciate all the concern everyone has shown for his 36-year-old son. He said doctors have said it will probably be Monday before they can fully assess Chris's condition.

Our readers are encouraged to post a best-wishes comment here. We'll make sure Chris gets all of them once he's up and around and back heading up our music coverage.

And at this point, the Houston Press would like to thank the passerby who gave Chris CPR, the ambulance personnel and the medical staff for all they're doing to bring him back to good health.

Please join us in keeping Chris Gray in your thoughts and prayers.

I know there are a lot of smart alecks out there, but I really hope no one is sending him cigarettes!  And don't even think about that "Omaha Steaks" subscription you were thinking about!  Weirdo's!

Love you Chris!  So happy to hear you're on the mend & still sending love & prayers to you & your family!

Chris, you are way too young to be pulling a Claypool. Glad to hear you're on the mend.

Clearly Chris needs to get better. The inevitable "Top 5 List of Songs About Heart Attacks" won't play well if he doesn't.

Hi Chris - I've seen you at a couple shows, however I don't know you personally. Regardless, you're going to pull out of this and be fine.  I don't pray to a God, however I'm sending you the best karma I can to get you healthy as soon as your body allows.  You've made it through the worst part of this experience, and one day, a few years from now, you'll be out drinking and tell the story of your only heart attack with laughter.  You won't be smoking (wow, what a drag not to have to leave indoor places on a schedule for the 'nicotine break'), but you'll be fine without the poison.  Do everything your asked to do by the doctors, but look for a second opinion if they tell you anything that doesn't feel right to you (besides not smoking).

Looking forward to seeing you (and reading you) cover the next show....

Hey Chris, I just filmed a Channel 11 piece about you and they even shot some footage in your office. Maybe now you will clean it up.

Also, I love you man, and you have taught me so much these past four years about the dark art of music writing. The history lessons, the geeking out, th festivals, the club shows, the big venue shows, the daily grind of writing Houston's sexiest music blog has all been a blast, and you will come back sooner than we all think ready and able to kick ass.

And no, I haven't stolen any books or music from your office. I swear.
