30 Seconds with La Dispute's Jordan Dreyer

Categories: Inquiring Minds

By fusing spoken word with an unrelenting punk-2.5 sound, La Dispute has won our allegiance. We gave singer Jordan Breyer the third degree in order to find out what we could from him in 30 seconds.

Rocks Off: What is the worst song in the world?

Jordan Dreyer: It's hard for me to say, really, because I do think "worst" is an opinion. There is probably a lot of good in things that I don't like for whatever reason, but I really, really don't like that song "Stroke" by Billy Squier. That one I have a hard time finding the good in.

RO: What is the best lyric in the world?

JD: Again, "best" is misleading, and picking a favorite lyric is incredibly difficult for me because there are so many I love, but the line "We're not scare-mongering/ This is really
happening" from the song "Idioteque" by Radiohead has always made me uneasy. I love it for that, so I'll say that this time, but it's always changing.

RO: Someone throws a beer bottle at you on stage. What do you do?

JD: Does it hit me? Because then I probably need medical attention, in which case I ask for medical attention. If not, probably nothing. No sense in letting one bad apple spoil the bunch.

RO: Without worrying about space, time, or the laws of physics, what would be the ultimate gig to play?

JD: I can't think of anything more historic than the dawn of time itself, whenever that was, so being able travel back in time to be a part of that would be pretty legendary.

RO: What would you buy with a million dollars?

JD: Season tickets for all Detroit sports franchises except maybe the Pistons, lots of
plane tickets and various other travel-related items, and lots of gifts for friends and family.

RO: What would you buy with your last dollar?

JD: A pen, probably.

RO: If you could canonize another musician, who would it be and of what would they be the patron saint?

JD: Joanna Newsom would be Patron Saint of Both Adorable and Brilliant.

RO: What will be written on the plaque beneath the giant statue future generations erect in your honor?

JD: That I really didn't like that song "Stroke" by Billy Squier, that the people around me were amazing, and that they should probably be erecting statues to more deserving people than me.

La Dispute plays House of Blues tonight. Their new album Wildfire is now available.
