Dig This: Mydolls, Second Lovers, Yello Echo, The Answer Page & //TENSE//

Categories: Local Motion

The current volume of local music is staggering. New Houston bands and new songs are born daily, and all too often pass away just as quickly. Rocks Off wants to help you (and ourselves) keep up.

It's time for another installment of Dig This, wherein we inform you about the multitude of musical projects currently rocking this city. Just like last time, here's five more profiles of some varied acts we've come across recently. Some more recently than others, but that's not the point. Dig in.

The Mydolls: These ladies are by no means a new act - Houston's Mydolls have been around since 1978 and rank as legends in the annals of punk. Last week saw the passing of guitarist Kathy Johnston, who joined when the group began playing again in the '90s. As such, they pulled off their show scheduled for the weekend, but don't let that be an excuse for not checking out their music.

Second Lovers: "Daydreamer," the first track of this new four-piece indie-folk group's demos, starts out with a great shuffle beat. Male and female vocals interplay often, with an airy slide guitar filling the space. Touches of Tom Petty abound, and this young crew seems to have a solid footing from the outset.

Yello Echo: This trio might only have three heads, but they wear many hats. "Irregular Love" floats some funky bass out there over which vocalist Crystal Toliver works some gravelly, Macy Gray lines. The band doesn't stop at that, however, bringing in Spaghetti-western guitar riffs, punk rock, soul, and rap.

Heck, "American Disease" has a heavy Rage Against The Machine vibe, except as fronted by a woman, and lacking some of the Tom Morello wonderment. They'll be kicking off the new season of The Caroline Sessions with a performance September 24. Videos from the Sessions are posted soon afterward, for those that will miss it due to attendance of something we call BestFest.
