Top Five Most Overpaid Musicians In The World

Categories: Pop Life

beyonceforbes july 8.jpg
Last month Forbes released their list of the 25 highest-earning musicians of 2010, and the list contains several talents Rocks Off is happy to see keeping the lights on. No. 1 on the list, U2, is still a favorite of ours after all these years, and it's always good to see Tom Petty, Jay-Z, and Beyonce doing well.

Even some of the performers we really don't like, we can understand why they're on the list. Justin Bieber, for instance, while not our preferred brand of music, is undeniably an international phenomenon. And although we hate everything Bon Jovi has done except for exactly five songs - go ahead, guess which ones - the guy is a massive success and has enjoyed that success long enough to see pretty much every band on modern country radio start sounding exactly like one song he wrote more than 20 years ago.

We feel like some of the people on that list, however, don't belong, are inconsequential, or could be easily replaced. Here are the five most glaring examples of performers who made way too much money last year.

5. Boyd Tinsley, Dave Matthews Band

We've got nothing against this guy, personally. Yet since 1995, whenever we've been unfortunate enough to be forced to watch lawyer-rock mainstays Dave Matthews Band perform, there he's been, sawing away on his tiny fiddle and grinning like an asshole. Why is he there? Does he add anything to Matthews' notoriously mediocre songs? Is he supposed to add some kind of country flavor to the sound, or maybe some kind of Celtic vibe? Because he doesn't.

If not for his conspicuous appearance and the occasional solo, we wouldn't even realize he was there. Now, couldn't that have been said for any member of the Dave Matthews Band? Of course. But as a fiddle player, and a giant African-American one at that, Tinsley's sound should ideally be as distinctive as his appearance. As it is, every time we're flipping through the channels and come to rest on a DMB performance, we're always somewhat surprised to see him.

"Oh right... that guy," we think to ourselves, before changing the channel.

4. Toby Keith

Toby Keith has done a lot of admirable work performing for and otherwise supporting American troops. Literally everything else he's done has been entirely loathesome. From his terrible music to his thoughtless, un-American attacks on the Dixie Chicks, Keith's work is a parade of macho redneck overcompensation combined with a sense of naked commercialism rivaled only by Gene Simmons.

We were surprised it took Ford as long as it did to stick him in their commercials, considering both are towering icons for fake country-boy bravado with little actual substance beneath. He seems about as authentic as Larry the Cable Guy, and his lyrics are about as clever.

I just read all 28 comments. I think it's wonderful for everyone to recognize your ignorance and call you out on it so fast. Your comments were rude, hurtful and definitely somewhat racially motivated. It's great to see people from all walks and cultures come together and hold you responsible for your nonsense. In the future, please thoroughly research the topic before you just start writing what you think your audience wants to hear..

Whoa...hey now...no need to disparage the legal profession here...I'm a lawyer and, quite frankly, I'm offended!  Appalled!  Outraged!

I like the Stooges and a lot of other stuff that doesn't suck.  DMB is like f'n elevator music.

In any event, it's always good for a few laughs when the "you call this journalism?!" or "this is biased!" or "YOU, sir, don't know anything about good music" crowd crawls out of the woodwork to defend their questionable taste on a music blog written by a music geek who surely has a broader, more intense musical experience/background from which to form an educated opinion.

On the other hand, those who are lazy, or aren't as passionate about music as they like to think, or, for whatever reason, make less of an effort...end up at DMB, Rascal Flatts, Jimmy Buffett, Creed/Nickleback, or Coldplay shows.

Yes indeed, DMB fans, there is undeniably better music out there.  You just have to try a little harder to find it.

the only problem I see with the article is Gary Levox is probably one of the nicest guys I have ever met ...other than that the rest of it is pretty dead on....

If you can move money, you deserve to keep some for yourself. Don't be jealous. Become more valuable.

Dear Writer:  You can curmudgeon all he want w/your '$.02 opinion,' but there are obviously HUGE reasons for such success & devoted following sustaining & GROWING all these yrs. We all do not need, nor are we seeking your approval. It is called 'ART' -- which is interpreted differently by everyone, which you clearly cannot grasp.

Obviously DMB (the entire band together & individually) speaks to each of us, their devoted fan-base, personally & that we have a special depth you do not --- how sad for you. I'm sure there are things / sounds / sites that may appeal to you that does not appeal to us. And I'm sure that us DMB fans & family would respect your choice of music, even if we do not 'get it'.  It's a matter of what speaks to you... and each of us.  -- Like I said... WHATEVER

And what's with pointing out Boyd's race or size -- was that relevant at all??  Is the fact that DMB is so diverse an issue for you??  Sounds like a 'you' issue to us.

Say what you will about some bands or band members, you certainly know nothing about the Dave Matthews Band. Boyd is an amazing musician that is much loved by his million of fans and no, we don't change the channels ever if we see him or any of the other band mates. Know of what you speak. This band has had staying power because we love them and can't wait to see Boyd or any of the other DMB members playing! And although they are all high money makers, they all share their wealth with thousands of people in need!

if you don't appreciate boyd tinsley's musical abilities, that's one thing.  we're all entitled to like what we like.  but to jab at him for being a "giant african american" who "grins like an asshole" totally negates this entire article as being worthless print written by someone who probably got yelled at and cut down a lot as a kid.  whether or not you like what he puts out, he is overcome with joy when he plays and he shows it.  that does not make him an "asshole".  and finally, the fact that you could write these things, which in no way contribute to his musical ability, means you aren't the type who would "get" dmb in the first place and we the dmb community are glad you aren't a part of it.  we don't need your negative energy.

I think the only thing more mediocre than the Dave Matthews Band is your writing John.

You people are idiots.  This is a humorous music blog, not Time fucking Magazine.  Dave Matthews and all his cronies suck balls.  Get used to it.

What?  This is journalism?  How easy to hide behind an anonymous keyboard and blast people who obviously work harder than you do.  Am I a fan of everybody on your list?  No.  But I appreciate the talent, hard work, and perseverance they've put in to become successful and - obviously - entertaining to a large contingent of fans.  You, on the other hand, apparently feel the need to denigrate other people so you can feel better about yourself.

Do you know how much Boyd is paid?  Some of his solos are my favorite solos in music. And mediocre songs?  The songs are good enough that they're one of my favorite bands along with Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Bruce Springsteen, etc.

"Citing Boyd Tinsley as an overpaid musician clearly demonstrates your lack of music appreciation and for one who seems concerned with "mediocre," your article barely rises to that level at best."

Rkymtnmary

Four paragraphs into this hit-piece, you demonstrated your ignorance of music when you cite Boyd Tinsley as topping the list.  Your opinion, therefore, is irrelevent.  You may not like DMB for whatever reasons, but to fail to recognize the mastery of Mr. Tinsley puts the Dunce cap squarely on your head.

"Matthews' notoriously mediocre songs". I am honestly surprised to hear you say that.

John Seaborn Gray

Oh boy. I should have known this would be too difficult for DMB fans to grasp.

OK. Let me try to break it down for y'all. I pointed out Boyd's size and ethnicity only to show that he's unique (there aren't many fiddle players like him). And I only brought THAT up to point out that if his fiddle playing was as unique and distinctive as his appearance, it would be awesome. See? I'm framing uniqueness as a GOOD thing. Trying to make it an issue of racism is missing the point.

Of course, it's entirely possible I was wrong to single out Boyd. After all, he really mainly plays what the band's chief songwriter, Dave Matthews, thinks sounds good. So I could be blaming the wrong person; perhaps Boyd is innocent, and his perceived lack of talent could simply be yet another result of Dave Matthews sucking. Hm. I should give this some thought.

Anyway, just wanted to clear up the racism issue. Now back to the butthurt! You guys are making my morning!

How many balls do you suck ASSHAT!  I can't stand most of the top 100 list but I don't cut down those who do...you must be a real winner! Go back to listening to you Beyonce and justin Beeber song's cause you obviously are tone deaf!

1)  Keyboards can't be anonymous...do they have names?  No.

2)  The writer's name is on the article.  Nothing about this is anonymous.

3)  What Hex said.

Your article was definitely full of racism.... and the fact that Boyd studied at Juilliard, you certainly haven't read anything about the man. You are an arrogant idiot that knows nothing of Boyd or any of the Dave Matthews Band or their millions of loyal fans... I really am amazed that any paper would hire a journalist, if in fact you even went to school and graduated with a degree (?) to bash someone like Boyd or any of the DMB members... and as I mentioned before, as one of the highest paid bands, they always share their wealth with all of the Countries and people in need. Have you sent any money to relief funds lately??? I am so frustrated at your lack of knowledge and your idiotic statements. Go back to school, read about the people you want to bash and maybe we can see a change in your little articles... because, my dear, you suck as a writer! And by the way, I am not a college aged fan, but a 56 year old mother and grandmother who goes every year to spend an evening with the Dave Matthews Band. My husband and I can dance, sing along with the band and have the most enjoyable evening of our year... we get to be kids again and at the same time, are old enough to know what is good music. Plus we know that a huge portion of our tickets (which by the way are still the cheapest tickets around for such a talented group of men) go to support education, music being put back into the schools, aids and homelessness in every city they perform at.

opinions are like assholes, everyones got one. boyd tinsley is a classically trained violin player of the highest caliber. his music brings joy to millions, me included. again, your entitled to your opinion, but i just found it rude & mean spirited. i would not call it journalism.

Cheers, indeed, Mr. Baryton! You seem slightly more lucid than usual. Been taking your meds? Good for you!

Dear Mr. Gray, the fact of the matter is that not only do you stoop to the level of personal insults rather than valid music criticism when it comes to articles like these, but you are already on "blog"-record for libelous slamming actual people in the Houston music scene. So, personally, those comments that accuse you of being a sorry excuse for a writer and a jealous musician ring somewhat true to me. Honestly I don't understand why you haven't been removed from the staff yet, but then I check the last name of the Senior editor and remember.

Come January, I will be laughing at how much fuller my life has gone this year then yours.

Cheers!
