Original deadhorse Not Playing Warehouse Live After All

deadhorse boiling EP june21.jpg
Well, damn. Rocks Off should have known that when something sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

And so, unlike what we reported Monday, the original lineup of Houston thrash-metal gods deadhorse will not be playing at Warehouse Live on October 22. The lineup that released the group's final recording, the 1996 Boil(ing) EP, will play.

Rocks Off just got off the phone with Warehouse's Christian Larson, who confirmed that the Boil(ing) lineup, fronted by Scott Sevall, is the correct one.

That wasn't always the case, at least not in theory. Larson says the plans were for both versions of deadhorse to perform, for original front man Michael Haaga, who left the group in 1994, and Sevall to each sing for a while. Then things basically "blew up," Larson says.

Unfortunately, someone put the cart before the horse, as it were. From what Larson and Haaga's brother (and former deadhorse manager) Randy told us, it sounds like the chain of bad information started when no one bothered to inform Haaga about the reunion plans or ask if he might like to participate. We also called and emailed Haaga ourselves, but haven't heard back.

It's a moot point now, we suppose. Rocks Off apologizes for getting anyone's hopes up. As we understood it, and Larson told us yesterday, it was a done deal. We both thought it was, but obviously that wasn't the case.

Is half a deadhorse better than none? Can't say. Like we said yesterday, Rocks Off never saw either version of the band live, and we were looking forward to it. We'll probably still go to the show out of curiosity, but in all likelihood the chances of an original deadhorse reunion are further away than ever.

Dammit. There's probably not much chance of the Pain Teens getting back together, either.

Open letter to dead Horse:

Regarding not using Haaga -- you might have had a vaild argument if the band had actually continued further with Scott than you did, but here are facts:

1 - Haaga was the frontman for seven years (not to mention the visionary artist).2 - After Haaga left, he was replaced by a guy that just did his best to copy Haaga's style, bringing nothing original to the band.3 - After two years with the new guy, the only thing the band has to offer is a new release called BOIL(ing).4 - BOIL(ing), which wasn't even a full length album, included some re-recorded songs already released with Haaga. (How original.)5 - dead Horse then quickly fades away and disbands.6 - Try coming up with some original artwork (as in, anything NOT done by Haaga).

why is someone who never saw...or apparently listened to...dead horse writing this article...it comes across as a bitchy tmz rant...let the person who wrote it write lady gaga reviews

I bet that almost every person that is whinning and moaning about Mike not playing the show is going to show up anyways.

I would like to say that as a band we all wrote all the music. no one person had any more part in it than the other. To say that mike not being a part of it makes it olny 1/2 dead horse is the stupidest thing i've read yet......I think I know all the facts correctly.....mike was the last one to join the band and the first one to quit......all we are doing is letting everyone know we are still a band.........thats it......

Whorescore

Mike may have been last to join and first to quit, but dH SUCKED after Mike left. If the remaining members had ANY class or originality, they could have at least come up with some new artwork and merch...but Mike's art remained. dH without Mike is a fucking joke.

Holy Hell...3/4 (not half) of the original deadhorse playing deadhorse tunes is better than no deadhorse show at all. Stop whining like a bunch of little pansy bitches.

Deadhorse, 2nd edition, was better anyway! How about that reunion show Scott Sevall!!!

I'm thinking of Princess Bride: mostly deadhorse

Some combination of intrepid reporter and thorough club management pretty clearly cocked this up. I was never under the impression MH was playing. Don't know why anyone else would have been except for the Press reporting it that way. Guess it's easier to put it off on the band though eh? Classy guys, classy.

I never wanted to see dead horse go on without Michael Haaga back in 94 (it kinda made me sick to my stomach) but when I saw them live I had to admit they weren't bad at all, in fact they were good. I was impressed in 1995. I'd expect the same from them next October, but...

When Michael did that Axiom reunion show a few years ago and played dead horse songs with Academy Black I had an equal amount of uneasy feeling going into it, but they also pulled off a very good show.

I'm old now, so recently when I took my kid to see The Fab 5 at Discovery Green (a bunch of old guys playing Beatles songs) I was again pleased and impressed. No offense to any of the people I've just mentioned, but I think it turns out that really good songs could be played by monkeys with a decent result. Songs make the band! Does anyone disagree? Really? (leave KISS out of this)

Haaga is not in this version of dead horse so I challenge Greg, Ronny and Allen to play a show with songs that were not written by Michael Haaga. See what kind of band that makes. It still leaves you a few songs, I think. You could play Rock Lobster twice but I'm pretty sure that was Haaga's contribution too.

Try promoting it that way, see how it goes. Stand on your own, I dare you.

funny....mike only helped write the songs.....as a band "we" wrote the music....we ALL wrote the music.... i would expect comments like that from people who don't know how a band works....

Whorescore

So how many songs did "you" write withOUT Mike??

Your Ass

Check the CDs, the good ones. Michael Haaga wrote nearly all the lyrics. I'm just saying you guys are going to be performing songs with lyrics written by Michael Haaga. I didn't say anything about how lame you are, just that I bet you wouldn't dare do a show with-out performing songs that were written by Michael Haaga. Are you the drummer for the band? Why are you crying like a baby about this.

Like I said. Mike only helped write the music and for your information we all also wrote lyrics. Yes he wrote alot of them but as a band we all were responsible for the final product of every song. And as for your crying comment it makes me laugh how you are the one crying in your oatmeal about Haaga not playing. He quit the band and yes... We are still a band .. So get over it.................

How can they say without Mike it would be HALF of Dead Horse? WTF?

Lisasullharr

It will be a good show with Scott at the helm, just not the full band that many of us grew up listening to and fell in love with. Not sure where the mixup occurred but Warehouse Live is definitely putting their own spin on it if they are saying there were ever plans for Mike to participate. We can still hope that one day all the original members will work things out but today is not that day.

how can it be that haaga was supposed to be doing the show if he was never approached as you state in your article?this show is going to rule because it'll be dead horse.  it's too bad that mike won't be a part, but i'll be stoked to see them with scott!

Allen Price

Rocks on or off? Get  your facts from the horse's mouth. This article is SO WRONG and full of bogus BS. deadhorse never intended for Mike Haaga to play. Do not know were that comes from but Randy Haaga left the band before Mike, The 3 original members never considered play'n with Haaga. Allen "Alpo" Price. deadhorse Texas on facebook!
