5 Things Sarah Palin Should Know About Common

Dear Sarah Palin, we smelled the stench of desperation and traced it down the Twitter hallway. It led us to some foul words about rapper Common. It started when Michelle Obama scheduled a poetry event at the White House and invited several poets, including Common. Conservatives immediately had their panties in a collective bunch, citing that one time Common referenced violence in a poem.

Now, we realize that you and your Fox News brethren may need a little education in our world, so we'll do our best to help. You already know that Common is a rapper from the South Side of Chicago, one of the best to ever do it, and all that good stuff.

Well, here are a few things you may not know about Lonnie.

MAYA ANGELOU IS HIS HOMEGIRL

Did you know that the legendary Maya Angelou endorsed Common as a solid human being? Are you aware that Dr. Angelou never cosigns people publicly? Did you know that she spoke these words about Common's influence:

The truth is, we make a mistake when we think that generations can be separated. The truth is, you need me so that I have shoulders you can stand on. And you need me so that you have shoulders somebody else can stand on. We are one. And to separate us and decide that we'll be polarized, is ridiculous, it's stupid, and it's dangerous.

Do those words mean anything to you? Do you even know who Maya Angelou is? Either way, she uttered those words about Common and praised his courage and his music and his all-around awesomeness. Did you know that she also gave a stamp of approval to Common's charity organization, the Common Ground Foundation. Are you aware that Common runs a charity organization?

COMMON IS FOR THE CHILDREN

It's true, that foul rapper Common runs a charity organization for at-risk youth in underserved communities. You didn't know that, did you? Well, he does and it's a legit organization with a functioning Web site and everything, not some B.S. tax write-off with a lame site that only works on Sunday. It's called Common Ground, as in, it's actually possible for people of different backgrounds to find shared interests without slinging shit every second to see how many flies you'll catch.

Are you aware that Common is not just a rapper, he's a man who's committed to helping kids find various outlets of creative expression? Are you proud of him for giving back to his community in a positive way?

Regardless to the first lady brings to the white house, her husband is an utter failure.  I like your newspaper for the restaurant reviews and entertainment guides, but I will admit your spin on politics and government is almost always wrong. Common was a bad choice to bring to the white house. Anyone who is that divisive is a bad choice to bring to the white house. He most assuredly has issues with white people.  Therefore he is a bad representative of any race/culture. It seems that obama and his ilk are cowards when it comes to race, just like their boy holder said.

Rizoh. Did you know that Common supported a woman who fled the country for Cuba after killing a police officer? Did you know the officer deserved it? Did you know the officer didn't deserve it? Do you know if the officer had a family? Did you know if the officer was a racist?  No, I didn't think so. There's a lot of stuff we don't know or are even slightly curious about unless our own sensibilities are effected. Yep, we're all egregiously ignorant in our own right.

For what it is worth, my political ideology has been historically more Republican than Democrat.  I'm an old white guy from Kansas.  I'm not very informed about the impact of Common as an artist.  Here's my point: I've seen and heard from both Mrs. Obama and from Mrs. Palin on other issues, and I would not think twice about trusting Mrs. Obama's judgment hands down, every time.  It is just impossible for me not to view those two individuals and realize they are not in any way equal.  If I did not understand a decision that Mrs. Obama had undertaken, I would be very careful to understand the facts first as I would assume that she would be very well briefed on any issue of interest to her.  Conversely, I would not trust any assertion from Mrs. Palin without documented proof from someone else.  The President and the First Lady have conducted themselves with honor and they have my respect. I refuse to let Mrs. Palin or Mr. Trump to be discussed without remarking on how low and inappropriate their behavior has been toward the sitting President and First Lady.  Shame on them and I cast another vote for turning the channel on any media that will have them.

Sarah Plain is a joke Fox news is the only station she can go on. Education is one thing she don't have and don't know to much about anything

She is a bad reality star at best. I can't believe anyone still takes her seriously, but some very misguided folks do, and thats the real tragedy. the republican party is a sad group of misinformed individuals. I would also like the pun-dents to stop saying Obama is a communist. I am certain they don't actually know the definition for the word they so freely use to describe Obama.

While I personally have no problem with Common the Obama Administration should have known that people would attack for what he has said in the past. If Bush had brought someone to the White House who had spoken about burning Bill Clinton, killing cops and not approving of inter-racial marriage the left would of freaked out. Think about how your side would react before you decide to line up and beat the other side.

Sarah Palin isn't the problem. She's just the latest outward symptom of how sick our society has become. She has zero political power, no expertise in any field of endeavor, and she fails to demonstrate even a basic understanding of, or interest in, facts. Her entire purpose in saying or doing anything is to self-promote. The fact that she falls back on repeating her "greatest hits" bumper-stickery bon mots with the frequency of a 70's tv character with a catchphrase, would aso indicate she's none too bright.

With all this in mind, she can be safely ignored. Any reasonable person would treat her with the indifference she deserves. So, why do tv networks keep sticking a camera in her face to get her take on world events? Because they're giving the public what they want. Sarah Palin talking on television is the equivalent of a d-list celebrity reality show. People will watch that crap with a sick fascination. "Will Bobby from Taxi finally end up dead in a hotel room?" "Will Meatloaf punch Gary Buesey? Tune in and find out!"

Stop looking at it, and it will go away.

Burning Bush and killing cops kind of ruins his awesomeness.Maya needs to look harder for someone to stand on.

According to the Common Ground Foundation's most recent IRS filing, Common spends an average of 30 minutes per week on his charity -- that's down from an hour a week in the previous year.

It took in $271,055 in contributions. It had one employee who was paid $75,000. It spent $55,000 on travel, $38,000 on IT stuff and $44,000 in "management fees." It made a grant of $874.

By the way, has anyone seen her application for police dispatcher, where she admitted she did not have a college degree?

What's really humorous in all this is that Sarah's second book was publicized as being "poetry, scripture, and sermons that have inspired Sarah Palin." Either she couldn't come up with one poem that she ever read, nor one sermon she heard, or she decided that people really, really wanted to read about her ragging on the President like some 8th grader who wasn't asked to the big dance. She is about as juvenile as they come, and every time someone puts another $100,000 in her sweaty palm, she is validated as important. Time to stop paying her, tea baggers. She is not helping you, nor the country. She is a divisive shrew.

Education is her biggest problem. One needs to become INFORMED before they just endorse the latest Hannity rant. It is too bad that she has been reduced to an aging cheerleader desparately trying to align herself with the latest controversy in order to stay in the game.

Yeah, Sarah Palin is grasping at straws with this one. Will the uninformed Alaskan please take a seat and ZIP IT?!

Good points, but isn't it obvious that SP herself cannot read? ...or is it WILL NOT read?

You can't reason with these people Riz, it's part of the reason they bitch so much about shit they don't understand. They see the term "rap", "black" and "educated" and freak the fuck out, completely disregarding that poetry is written in naratory form and the words are meant to enhance a perspective.

The real question out to be, did Common fall off after "Like Water for Chocolate".

Desperation to restore the status quo with another rich white anglo-saxon is thick in the air. Common aka. Rashid is a man that is for growth in all facets. Fox news as usual, took a snippet of his poetry and failed to understand that poetry is often written in different narratives. So if Hannity and co. want to recite lines, they must realize that must not take it out of context. Common was invited because of his body of work. He appeals to the youth like no other poet invited that night. Wake up already!

sarah palin, glen beck, et al have spewed more vile and dangerous rhetoric (and clumsily at that!) than this man. the gop is a joke full of clowns and hypocrites.

This is hypocritical and you need to watch the Jon Stewart clip below. Bush did in fact bring someone with blatant diversive lyrics and give him an award. Johnny Cash. I don't mind but where was everybody screaming their heads off then?

Thenonymous, you are partially correct here sir. However this frame of thought is larger than Sarah Palin; it spreads throughout the network, it's anchors and its devoted watchers. Even if we took Common out of the equation what we are left with is still a talking point spun into a controversy for the particular reason to make the president out to be a "radical". They have been intent on this from the outset of his campaign, and now that election season is in the near future the same applies. They know that almost all of their viewers have little to no knowledge of who Common is, so between splicing clips with him performing, Rev. Wright parading around, the buzzwords 'cop killer" etc. it makes him look like another "scary, radical black man". Cast bait will always reel in a fish, which is partially why so many people find it hard to look away. Peace.

actually, it kind of increases his awesomeness.

and he stands on ms. angelou--someone else stands on him. get your shoulder-standing in order, son. i expect more from someone who calls a poet with 30 honorary degrees and a pulitzer prize nomination by her first name, given that that must mean you guys are really close.

Agreed...interesting that her biggest fans on Fox are the college dropouts, and Van Sistern, whose husband is paid by Palin for legal work.

She told Perky she reads "any of em, all of em, placed before me" She's journaled since she was a child, which helped her write her 3 million bestseller, in two months, Pretty impressive.

I'm sorry I didn't bow down to the rock, the tree, and the river. She needs to give those degrees back if she supports common.
