DJ Supastar Schools "Minis" At Girls Summer Camp

​For the most part, we've avoided adding DJs to the Artist of the Week army. It's not because they aren't talented - because a lot of them are - it's just that the situation can be a bit tricky.

Like, it's easy to tell when a DJ is good at what he/she does; your protons just feel extra positive. But it's hard to tell when a DJ isn't good at what they do, because a lot of the times they're just their playing fun, fun, fun songs that other musicians made and warning people that if they park in the parking lot across the street at the Chinese restaurant they're going to get towed.

DJ Supastar makes your protons feel good. That's why she's becoming the first female DJ in the history of this here column. And if that weren't enough, she's created a DJ Summer Camp for young girls who are interested in working out their own spot in what is generally a boys club. Golden high-five for that.

Interview ahead, sucka MCs.

Rocks Off: First, tell everyone everything they need to know about DJ Supastar in exactly six words.

DJ Supastar: Determined, dream chaser, loyal, honest, fun and laid back.

​RO: So tell everyone a little about this DJ Summer Camp that you have going on?

DJ: This will be a nine-week camp for young ladies who are interested in pursuing DJing. We will cover the fundamentals of DJing, Equipment Setup, Beat Counting and Basic Mixing and - get this - with vinyl records. If they find that this is something that they would like to pursue further, I will also have advanced classes available in which other DJs will be incorporated.

RO: Why, please tell, is this only for girls? What about the aspiring young male DJs? You hate those kids? We guess we hate them too then. Yeah, that settles it. We hate 'em. Down with teenage male DJs. You and us, we're starting the revolution right now.

DJS [laughs]: Well, when I first took interest in DJing, I reached out to several male DJs and some showed tough love, and at the time I didn't know of any other female DJs in the city. So it was placed on my heart years ago to create a platform for other young ladies interested in the field. If I had this opportunity at the age of 13-17, then who knows where I would be?
