30 Seconds With Avant
Rocks Off hooked up with R&B supervoice Avant (no, not like that) to see we could find out about the man behind hits like "Separated" and "My First Love" in 30 seconds.
Rocks Off: What is the worst song in the world?
Avant: "Thong Song" - it's amazing that someone made a hit out of women's underwear. It sure is catchy, though! "Thong thong thong thong thong." Can you imagine writing that in the studio?
RO: What is the best lyric in the world?
A: "Your body's here with me but your mind's on the other side of town," from the O'Jays song of the same name. It has two meanings: It can be totally funny like the person is crazy. Or it can have a deep meaning by saying a relationship is more than just spending time with someone. There needs to be an inherent connection.
RO: Someone throws a beer bottle at you? What do you do?
A: I usually use my money to buy gifts for other people. When is someone going to start gifting me?
RO: What would you buy with your last dollar?
A: Food for my son. I hope it doesn't ever come down to that!
RO: Without worrying about space, time, or the laws of physics, what is the ultimate gig?
A: I once read that the least stressful job was that of a forester. I also read that Virginia Beach was the least stressful city. So the ultimate gig would be a forester in Virginia Beach - you'd have no stress!
RO: If you could canonize another musician, who would it be and of what would they be the patron saint?
A: Lady Gaga - she'd be the patron saint of earworms (songs that get stuck in your head), not literal worms...although that might be interesting too.
Avant performs 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 13, at House of Blues.
