Versatile musician Clyde Brewer, one of the founders of the popular Houston-area Western swing band River Road Boys, passed away Jan. 8 at his home near Magnolia. He was 80.

Originally from Luling and later Beaumont, Brewer was a noted session player as early as the 1950s when he and cohort Herb Remington played on many of the historic sessions at Gold Star (SugarHill) Studios.

According to Remington, he and Brewer "played on most of the big sessions back in those days, whoever came to town. We did sessions with George Jones and, along with Paul Buskirk, did the original Willie Nelson sessions there."

Remington noted that Brewer, who played fiddle, mandolin and piano, eventually became a supervisor with the City of Houston Water Department.

"Clyde had a number of musicians working on the trucks under him, so he was instrumental in supporting the Houston country music scene in so many ways," Remington said.

Remington worked for ten years with Brewer in one of the early incarnations of the River Road Boys.

"I took off and did my own thing for a number of years, but I came back and worked with Clyde again for another 5-6 years. So he and I have a considerable history together."

The River Road Boys have been almost an institution in the Houston area for over 40 years. They provided the entertainment when President George H.W. Bush and James Baker hosted the G7 economic conference in Houston in 1990.

The band recorded over 20 albums and has been inducted into the Western Swing Hall of Fame.

"Clyde's passing is a huge loss for all of us in country music," said Remington.
