The Mink Celebrates Five-Year Anniversary With Young Girls

Goodness, it's been a while since our last MCM update, but we're back. Rocks Off is scouring the Internet for every tidbit of Houston music news we can find, and reporting it all back every Friday. If you'd like to facilitate our hunt, feel free to drop a line to marc [dot] brubaker [at] gmail [dot] com.

Is the Mink really five years old already? Sure enough, and the party tonight will include a 7" release from Young Girls, DJ sets from Dayta, Le Hibou and DJ I'M NOT A DJ!, door prizes from Cactus Music and bartenders naming their own prices from 9-11 p.m. Make your cab reservations now.

While we're talking about the Mink, everyone at listenlisten's dog release show last Saturday was captivated by John "Little Red" Trower as the elderly gentleman threw knives at his assistant. Now not one, but two gorgeous videos of this event have surfaced. One is a fantastic piece from local photographer Mark Austin , and the other comes from the IndieHouston.org crew - and not only is it easy on the eyes, but it features some of the band's performance.

Speaking of Mark Austin, he's put together a benefit for the Houston Food Bank at Warehouse Live this Thursday. Dubbed Canned Acoustica, it features a solid lineup of local musicians supporting this noble cause.

Let's talk about some other upcoming shows:

  • Roky Moon & BOLT! will relaunch their self-titled album with a free show next Saturday at Fitzgerald's, with a lineup including Indian Jewelry, Woozyhelmet, Leg Sweeper, Benjamin Wesley and more. Did we mention that it's free?
  • Clory Martin unveils her new Summer Spent EP at Rudyard's next Friday.
  • Reckless Endeavor's an album release is also next Friday at Fitzgerald's, also a free show. Full disclosure: Four Rocks Off writers are in bands playing that night.
  • Temporary Insanity, a massive two-day punk show/record swap, hits lower Main at Dean's and Notsuoh next weekend.
  • Jeremy Hart over at Space City Rock highlights the upcoming benefit for Girls Rock Camp next Saturday at Rudz. Our opinion is that people that don't support GRC have no soul.
