The Ladies Strike Back, Actually

Rocks Off is following our sister Houston Press blogs into the choppy waters of "Comment of the Day," choosing a comment or a handful of comments from the previous day we find especially enlightening, infuriating or just plain hilarious. We're glad our readers have opinions, whatever they are, about what we write, and encourage them to keep 'em coming.

It's time to end this pointless charade. Tuesday Rocks Off Jr. (smile, Craig) came up with what we thought was a pretty good list of Christmas-movie soundtracks. He left off our favorite, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, but we let it slide. We looked up the soundtrack, and there really aren't enough songs in the movie to even make an album.

We did find a soundtrack CD on Amazon, but it had been filled out with dialogue from the film - including our favorite scene - plus "Holiday Road" and "Dancing Aross the U.S.A." from the original National Lampoon's Vacation. Rocks Off likes Lindsey Buckingham.

Anyway, we do have a point, and here it is: Rocks Off Sr. and Jr. are both dudes. This fact has been brought to our attention many times by any number of women over the course of both our lives, and was yet again in the comments on Craig's blog.

Let me be the first female to ask:
Whither Love Actually?!

Hala says:

I fucking love Love Actually.

To repeat, Rocks Off Nos. 1 and 2 are dudes. This means we are drawn to Christmas movies with BB guns, exploding sewers and Santa Claus getting it on in dressing rooms and mall parking lots more than we are to lots of romantic drama and Brit-chat about relationships.

Believe it or not, Rocks Off Sr. has seen Love Actually. More than once. It is set at Christmastime, although the soundtrack is split about half and half between Christmas and non-Christmas songs. But we hate to disappoint our female readers - we've disappointed enough women in our lives - so here are a few selections from Love Actually.

Enjoy, ladies.

The Beatles, "All You Need Is Love"

Bay City Rollers, "Bye Bye Baby"

Joni Mitchell, "River"

Mariah Carey, "All I Want for Christmas Is You"

Otis Redding, "White Christmas"

Pointer Sisters, "Jump (For My Love)"

Now if you'll excuse us, we'll be listening to Drive-By Truckers, N.W.A. and Guns N' Roses for the rest of the day.
