Magpies Swoop Into Mucky Duck Sunday

One of Lonesome, Onry and Mean's favorite roots-rock bands returns to Houston Sunday to play the Mucky Duck. Cleveland's hard-traveling Magpies fall somewhere in that sweet zone between Tom Petty and the Gourds, meaning they rock it hard but with plenty of twang.

With its tasty licks and down-home lyrics, the band's 2008 release Eastern Standard Time established the Magpies as a force in the No Depression world. The band, which morphed out of guitarist/singer Roger Hoover's previous outfit, the Whiskeyhounds, has toured Texas three or four times a year since appearing at Hayes Carll's Stingaree Festival in 2008, where they literally stole the show.

Sunday will mark the first time the band has played the Mucky Duck, and it should be interesting to see this firehouse of a band very up close and personal.

6 p.m., Sunday, May 23, at McGonigel's Mucky Duck, 2425 Norfolk, 713-528-5999 or www.mcgonigels.com.
