Magnolia City Mixtape has already reported on actor/vodka mogul/sunglasses model/blues aficionado Dan Aykyroyd's impending visit to Houston, where he'll serve as grand marshal in the
2010 Art Car Parade and
host a night of local blues at House of Blues' Bronze Peacock Room Saturday, May 8, a couple of times. That HOB show, featuring Little Joe Washington, Texas Johnny Boy, Milton Hopkins and Diunna Greenleaf - who also performs from noon-1:30 p.m. tomorrow at
Discovery Green's "Blues & Burgers" series - is a benefit for the
International House of Blues Foundation.
Thursday,
Spacetaker is sponsoring a cocktail-party fundraiser for
Girls Rock Camp Houston from 5-10 p.m. at
Boheme to help the nascent local chapter of the international music-education/empowerment coalition raise money for instruments, supplies, refreshments and whatnot for GRCH's first camp at U of H from August 9-13.
MyCityRocks will match all donations up to $500, and a $50 donation will land you a Runaways gift bag (while they last) with the '70s rockers' ex-lead singer Cherie Currie's memoir,
Neon Angel; a CD of
Jett Rock: Joan Jett & the Blackhearts' Greatest Hits; T-shirt and poster; and two passes to Flora Sigismondi's biopic
The Runaways, which opens in Houston theaters Friday.
Rocks Off is fairly sure attending either one of these benefits - or both - will not give you a bad reputation.
