The Happen-Ins

Rocks Off is always looking for a cheapo weekend filled with wine, song, art and, well, debauchery if possible. The cheaper the better. So in that spirit...

Rockers the Happen-Ins have been getting considerable buzz in their hometown of Austin and airplay on KPFT. Rocks Off checked out some YouTubes, and they are a rocking but ragged ensemble; think early Rolling Stones bar-band stuff. They'll be playing Under the Volcano tonight from 8-10 p.m.; no cover.

Honky-tonker Mike Stinson will play a free in-store performance at 3 p.m. Saturday at Cactus Music. His new Jesse Dayton-produced CD "The Jukebox in Your Heart" has taken off on several XM channels. He'll open for Dayton at Cypress Saloon at 9 pm Saturday night. As usual at Cactus, there will be complimentary St. Arnold's beer during the performance (sorry Stinson, no Coors Light).

Art collective Sketchy Neighbors is having its annual show at Cactus Saturday. Titled "Accelerando Nonsense- Musically Themed Artwork, Silent Art Auction, Beer & Nonsense," according to Sketchy Neighbor artist Kelley Devine, "The show funds our big show at the end of the year. It's sponsored by 29.95.com and all the art is silently bid on starting out at $29.95." Here's a link for those interested.

And if you're still standing and functional by Sunday, former Houston blues man Mark May is having a CD release party for his new live album, In Texas Live, at Dan Electro's Guitar Bar in the Heights at 4 p.m.

So get off your duffs, scrounge all the change hiding in the sofa, roll the pennies in that huge jar on the floor, and get yourself out support art and music in H-Town this weekend. Ed. Note: We'd like to recommend Sunday's Dr. Dog/Deer Tick show at Warehouse Live too.
