Neil Young Said To Be Playing Jones Hall June 4 With Folk Legend Bert Jansch

UPDATE (12:32 p.m.): Now Rolling Stone is reporting Houston has been added to the tour, so it MUST be true.

UPDATE 2 (3:17 p.m.): Confirmed via press release from Young's label, Reprise Records. It's definitely happening. Ticket on-sale date still TBD.

USA Today's "LifeLine Live" blog reported Monday morning that Neil Young will play Jones Hall on June 4 as part of the grizzled Canadian-born rocker's solo "Twisted Road" tour. Neither Young's Web site nor Pollstar has this date listed (yet) - both only go through two shows at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium June 1 and 2. Call it a hunch, but we're inclined to believe this one. We certainly hope it's true.

Young has not played the Houston area since 2003, when he and longtime backing band Crazy Horse played the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on their Greendale tour, behind his concept album and companion Young-directed movie about a small town named Greendale, a murder and... well, even All Music Guide isn't really sure what it's about. Rocks Off caught that tour at Willie Nelson's July 4 picnic outside Austin that year, and we do remember the harvest moon (if you will) above and Native American ghost dancers onstage during "Rockin' In the Free World" much more than anything from Greendale.

Before that, Young played two solo dates at the Aerial Theater, now Verizon Wireless Theater, in June 1999. You can see the ticket stubs from those shows, as well as earlier Houston stops like March 1991 at the Summit with Sonic Youth and a July 1974 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young show at Jeppesen Stadium (original home of the Oilers), at this Web site. You will have to register and log in, though.

Even better, legendary British guitarist Bert Jansch will be opening Young's tour. Besides a heavy influence on Shakey himself, Jansch's moody, fingerpicking folk style was also one of Jimmy Page's principal models for many of Led Zeppelin's quieter, acoustic, more pastoral songs. Jansch has actually been to Houston more recently than Young - he played the Orange Show in June 2007.

As of right now, since the show is technically not confirmed, no ticket information has been announced. Rocks Off will let you know as soon as we hear anything further, of course.
