Just when Rocks Off was wondering how we were going to spend one of our last work-free days before SXSW, Cactus Music's weekly email circular showed up in our inbox. So now we know: We're going to be watching music. Shocker, huh? So much for laundry and shit.
Here's what's going down:
News on the March (1 p.m.): Before they head to Austin for a few SXSW-week shows to tune up for their tour kickoff at Mango's next Sunday, the Houston roots-rockers unveil some new tunes from their just-completed debut full-length Made In Kind. Check out "Silver and Rust" here. The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights screening (2 p.m.): For those of you unable to make it to Austin for next week's SXSW Film premiere, Cactus is screening the doc of Jack and Meg's 2007 Canadian tour on the in-store stage. Pre-order either the DVD or CD/LP soundtrack (which will be spinning in the adjacent Record Ranch while the movie plays) and get some nifty Stripes swag.
Martin Miglioretti poster exhibition (3 p.m.): Rocks Off had no idea who Miglioretti was (sorry, man) until we saw the Cactus email, but now that we know he's done prints of Houston blues royalty like Lightnin' Hopkins, Juke Boy Bonner, Big Mama Thornton and Amos Milburn, we can't wait to get a look at them - especially since the prints will be signed and on sale for $20 a pop instead of the regular $30.
Guitar Shorty (5 p.m.): We wonder if Miglioretti has a print of Guitar Shorty. He probably should. The 70-year-old Houston native, whose new album Bare Knuckle got a rave review in the most recent issue of Texas Monthly, stops by to singe some ear hair before his gig at the Big Easy later Saturday night.
Now that sounds like a hell of an afternoon. Bring some food (canned, probably), a $5 donation or some items from this list here for animal-welfare organization Rescue Bank and you'll even get a free T-shirt.
