Mardi Gras Mambo: "Krewe de Blue" DJ Clint Broussard's Favorite Fat Tuesday Jams

It's Fat Tuesday, which means before you get ashes painted on your forehead tomorrow, you'll be face-down in the gutter tonight. Rocks Off asked Clint Broussard, DJ for KTRU's "Blues In Hi-Fi" and tonight's "Krewe de Blue" Cowboy Mouth pre-party at House of Blues, to give us a few of his favorite Mardi Gras jams guaranteed to get you up and moving even if you think a second line is something you do in the bathroom. We're not here to judge.

1. The Hawketts, "Mardi Gras Mambo" (Chess)

"A telling New Orleans record that would introduce the voices of the Nevilles to the world!"

2. Elvis Presley, "Dixieland Rock" (RCA Victor)

"From the 1958 film King Creole! Not only Elvis' greatest acting, but definitely his best soundtrack. The Leiber/Stoller songs mesh supremely with his electric vocal and that killer Dixieland brass section... it's all here."

3. Jessie Hill, "Ooh Poo Pah Doo (Pts. 1&2)" (Minit Records)

"This song is such a party raver! The New Orleans 'Tick-Tock' sound that would be yet another trademark for the 504 area code..."

4. Huey "Piano" Smith & The Clowns, "Don't You Just Know It" (ACE Records)

"This is call and response at its finest! Features an uncredited Bobby Marchan on vocals, who used to dress up in women's clothes onstage! Mardi Gras, anyone?"

5. Tom Waits w/ the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, "Tootie Ma Was a Big Fine Thing" (White Tiger Records)

"This just came out about a week ago... unbelievable! Tom Waits fits right in to the groove with the PHJB! It's on a compilation called Preservation and features 19 artists with the PHJB!"

BONUS!

6. Clarence Garlow, "Bon Ton Roulet" (Arhoolie)

"The only original recording I have of this one is on an Arhoolie Compilation called Zydeco. Clarence was a fixture in and around the Gulf Coast. Great voice, and the percussion is interesting, but in the pocket, as we say! He later changed the time signature and re-recorded the song for Cossimo Matassa, calling it "New Bon Ton Roulet." You can find that one on The Cossimo Matassa Story box set on Proper."
