In case you hadn't already heard (like on
our Twitter feed), the
Flaming Lips are this year's headliner for
Free Press Summerfest, the Oklahoma psych-rockers' first Houston appearance since their joint tour with Beck stopped at Jones Hall back in 2002. The
Free Press' Omar Afra and
Pegstar's Jagi Katial announced the full lineup for Houston's up-and-coming music festival in Eleanor Tinsley Park, which mercifully moves to June this year instead of the middle of August, Sunday afternoon in the park between the Menil Collection and the Rothko Chapel.
Other Summerfest artists this year are mash-up mayhem artiste
Girl Talk, erstwhile Beastie Boys DJ
Mix Master Mike, Houston's
Slim Thug, NYC jazz/funk trio
Medeski, Martin & Wood, Canadian indie-poppers
Stars, indie-rock firestarters
Ra Ra Riot, garage terrorizers the
Detroit Cobras, Memphis roots-punks
Lucero, radical rappers
Dead Prez and electro whisperers
Lymbyc System.
That's not all, of course. There's about 50 local and regional Summerfest artists to come after the jump - but not, interestingly enough, many from Austin this time around. "We leaned so heavily on Austin bands last year, we kind of shied away from them this time," Afra told Rocks Off Sunday afternoon.
Doesn't appear to have hurt the festival much, if at all...
Not bad, huh? A limited amount of $15 - that's right, $15 - Summerfest passes are on sale now right now at
www.freepresssummerfest.com. Get 'em while they last, which won't be long.
