Former Sugar Hill Studios engineer Mickey Moody, who - unlike his boss Huey P. Meaux - was a quiet, behind-the-scenes man, died in Fort Worth over the weekend. Moody, chief engineer and right-hand man during Meaux's heyday at the historic Houston studio, was an important part of several historic recording projects, especially Freddy Fender's comeback hits like "Before the Next Teardrop Falls."

The Arkansas-born Moody worked with Meaux at Sugar Hill during the '70s and '80s, a period when he not only engineered Fender's most important recordings but worked on some of the earliest Asleep at the Wheel and Kinky Friedman records. In 1980, he played steel on and engineered Lucinda Williams' album Happy Woman Blues, her first all-originals recording. Moody also worked on tracks by Todd Rundgren, Texas Tornado Augie Meyers and Ted Nugent's band, the Amboy Dukes.

Moody was 69, a week and a half shy of his 70th birthday. According to Sugar Hill's press release, the cause of death was kidney failure.
