While doing our usual hunt for interesting acts coming to Houston in the next few weeks, Lonesome Onry and Mean came across some great stuff coming to Continental Club and McGonigel's Mucky Duck.
The brainy, always quirky Jonathan Richman will be at the Continental Saturday, January 29. An origianl member of proto-punks Modern Lovers, Richman just keeps coming up with compelling social commentary delivered with massive tongue-in-cheek. And he's just plain entertaining.
The Duck has a very solid January calendar, beginning with two sets from Charlie Robison on the 13th. Darden Smith and Dan Navarro share the stage on Jan. 14, and the versatile Ian Moore plays his Beatles-y rock on the 16th.
The last two weeks of January find a plethora of high-grade, rocking acts coming in for what purports to be a listening room: Willie Porter (Jan. 21); Scott Miller (Jan. 22, a Friday, so most likely young Miller will have his full band in tow); The Wylie Lama, Ray Wylie Hubbard himself (Jan. 23), will be touring behind his new album A. Enlightenment, B. Endarkenment, (Hint: There Is No C).
The following week is just as stout, with Canadian songmeister Fred Eaglesmith (Jan. 28); Austin pop-rocker Randy Weeks (Jan. 29), and bluesman Doyle Bramhall Sr., who only comes to town about every other year in for two shows (Jan. 30).
