Archie Bell, Roy Head Tapped for Free Mayoral Inaugural Concert at Discovery Green

Houston mayor-elect Annise Parker's office announced Wednesday afternoon that '60s soul stars Archie "Tighten Up" Bell and Roy "Treat Her Right" Head will be part of a free evening concert at Discovery Green next Monday, January 4. Parker is scheduled to take the mayoral oath earlier that day at the Wortham Center, though she'll actually be sworn in Saturday in a private ceremony, when current mayor Bill White's term expires. This is why we're glad we don't cover politics.

"I opted for a free concert over an invitation only gala because I want all of Houston to be able to participate in the celebration," the mayor-elect said in a prepared statement. "I invite families to bring blankets, lawn chairs and picnic baskets and join me under the stars in downtown Houston for an event that will have everyone on their feet dancing."

Also scheduled to appear are local salsa veterans Mango Punch and Houston native Jennifer Holliday, who won Tony and Grammy awards for originating the role of Effie in the Broadway production of Dreamgirls. Longtime Houston soul singer Yvonne Washington will join Bell and Head onstage for a revue backed by the Allen Oldies Band. The concert, which starts at 6 p.m., will be followed by fireworks.

Sounds like a good time to us, but we're curious - if everyone's going to be on their feet dancing, why is the mayor-elect encouraging them to bring lawn chairs?
