ACL 2009 Day Three: Arctic Monkeys Are All Growns Up
Just weeks after the release of their new Humbug, the Arctic Monkeys hit the AMD stage at mid-afternoon with a newly grungy sound reminiscent of Primal Scream and somehow, hairy period Kinks.

Maybe it had something to do with Queens Of The Stone Age's Josh Homme producing the new album, but the boys are now men who sound like their balls have dropped.
It's always cool to see a band change over the course of a few years. It was only 2006 when the band was somewhat unfairly lumped in with people like Bloc Party in the wave of British dance-punkers that came in the wake of Franz Ferdinand.
The new material is dark and driving, with splashes of Sabbath and Muswell Hillbillies-era Kinks. Lead singer Alex Turner has added a howl to his croon and even the older stuff like "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor" has a manly heft to it. As the son of Albion yelled behind us in the crowd "Ya done good, lads!"
