Lonesome Onry and Mean: Lying Liars and the Songs Written About Them

After South Carolina representative Joe Wilson's bush-league grandstander heckling of the President last night - imagine the hue and cry if Nancy Pelosi had done the same thing during one of W's inane lie-filled speeches! - what Lonesome, Onry and Mean needs is some songs about lies and liars.

One of our favorite candid recorded moments is on the bootleg of Bob Dylan's historic 1966 concert at London's Royal Albert Hall when, after a heckler screams at the electric Dylan "I'm not going to listen to you anymore," Dylan snarls "You're a liar." He can then be heard instructing the Band to "play it really fucking loud" as he kicks off "Like A Rolling Stone."

LOM only wishes Dylan could have been there last night to tell Representative Doofus to shut the fuck up.

1. The Castaways, "Liar Liar": LOM's teen-hood was packed with songs about lies, lying and liars. The Castaways sold over two million copies of this one. Break out the go-go cage.

2. The Knickerbockers, "Lies": Another huge '60s hit by the Knickerbockers. Every band in West Texas had to know this one if they were going to play the teen scene. One of those choruses you can't get out of your head.

3. Status Quo, "Lies": With their umpteen guitars and no fear, Status Quo took power to new levels. No less than 22 of their songs, including the oddity "Pictures of Matchstick Men," made the UK Top 10. "Lies" is just full-on fun rock 'n' roll.

4. Rolling Stones, "Lies": The Stones got in on the lying act in with this song from Some Girls (1978). This was when Jagger was augmenting that thick Stones sound with an extra electric guitar. What a smokin' track.

5. Albert King & Stevie Ray Vaughan, "Don't You Lie to Me:" Depending on who you believe, Chuck Berry stole this song from Tampa Red. And who knows if Red was even the first one to do this number, although there is no doubt that he had a 78 rpm version out. Albert and his acolyte Mr. Vaughan just singe this version.
