Things to Do This Weekend If You're Almost Broke

Another Friday afternoon and Rocks Off is itching to leave, so let's get to it.

Friday

Pop duo Adam & Lena play a free Cactus Music in-store at 5:30 p.m. Free beer, etc. Hurry, but if you miss them they'll be at Robusto's Cigar Lounge in Katy tomorrow night.

House of Blues hosts a triple bill of damn fine local bands - Southern Backtones, Sideshow Tramps and Buxton - for an H.I.S.D. benefit (the school district, not the rap group) in the Bronze Peacock Room. Admission is $10 or $10 worth of school supplies.

Austin mash-up evil genius Car Stereo Wars invades Boondocks. Free.

Because Zeppelin Lounge is closed either permanently or temporarily (we're not sure), the Making Moves art show/dance party has moved to the Green Room at Warehouse Live. Free until 11 p.m. or any time if you ride your bike.

Rip those sweatshirts for the Houston Photography Center's Flash Dance! fundraiser from 8-11 p.m.. $10 for members or anyone dressed in '80s garb; $15 otherwise.

Sean Reefer & the Resin Valley Boys haze it up at West Alabama Ice House. Free.

Saturday

Two worthwhile Cactus in-stores today: young folk-pop chanteuse Elaine Greer loosens up at 1 p.m.; funky rockers Electric Attitude throw down at 4 p.m.

Don't forget it's Rad Rich's Annual Rad Birthday Back 2 School Bash, or something like that, all afternoon long in Avant Garden and Mango's parking lots. Bands include American Sharks, Dolly Rockers, Grave Robbers, Fired for Walking, J.W. Americana, Oklahomos, Mic Skills and more. Donations benefit the Music Therapy Center of Houston.

Former HPMA Best New Band winner Snit's Dog & Pony Show sweats out a set or two at the Continental Club's Pachinko patio matinee. Free, 2 p.m.

Man, we're going to miss the McKenzies, but we're just thinking of the young power-poppers as going on hiatus. Every band gets back together eventually. At least they're going out with a bang at Mango's with the Tontons and Tax the Wolf.
