MP3 of the Day: Passengers' Leather-Scented Death Dirges

Somewhere down our dark and booze-addled alley lies the sound of Passengers. Rising from the pieces of mod-punks Teenage Kicks, comes copious amounts of grimy leather-scented organ-infused Krautrock.

This is the kind of music that the Brian Jonestown Massacre was making in the mid-'90s before Anton Newcombe turned into a right-wing gun nut. It also hearkens to the sound of the first couple of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club albums, and the collected works of Alex Maas' Black Angels, albeit with less shamanistic Austin-drenched lysergic madness.

The handful of songs we have been previewing from Passengers for the past week are five to six-minute death dirges where time signatures change like the pieces in a kaleidoscope and veer off into freaky-ass corners.

Simply put, Passengers excites the hell out of Rocks Off. This is "The Beginning Is The Beginning," currently streaming at the band's MySpace profile.

With Roky Moon & BOLT and DJ King Ghidora, 9 p.m. at the Backroom at the Mink, 3718 Main, 713-522-9985 or www.minkonmain.com.
