Heavy metal comedy troupe Steel Panther has cancelled tonight's Warehouse Live show. What's on VH-1 Classic?

Tennessee-born artist Wayne White is crafting a 15-foot puppet head in the likeness of Saratoga-born honky-tonk legend George Jones. Entitled "Big Lectric Fan to Keep Me Cool While I Sleep" - a reference to Jones' song "Ragged but Right" - and appropriately positioned on its side, asleep, the outsized bust is patterned after the flat-topped Possum circa 1950. The installation opens Thursday, September 10, at the Rice University Art Gallery in Sewall Hall, with a free reception from 5-7 p.m. catered by St. Arnold's Brewery; White will speak at 6 p.m. The sculpture will be displayed until October 18, when, like the Possum himself, it will mysteriously disappear.

Live Nation has extended its "No Service Fee" Wednesday promotion yet again, this time to most upcoming shows at House of Blues. Tickets for guitar wizard Eric Johnson (tonight), Interpol knockoffs She Wants Revenge (September 8), fabulous furry freak brothers the Butthole Surfers (September 24), boffo Brit-rock Psychedelic Furs/Happy Mondays double bill (September 26), Jacksonville-born pop-country songbird Lee Ann Womack (October 10), Georgia stompers Drive-By Truckers (October 30) and Jesus-loving shredders Stryper (November 5) are only $10 until midnight. See www.livenation.com for further information.

Tontons singer Asli Omar left for art school in New York today, but she's not staying long. The band helps say goodbye to the McKenzies Saturday at Mango's with Fat Tony and Tax the Wolf, and sticks around to play a free show at House of Blues' Bronze Peacock Room Monday. That show will be filmed by the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau for an upcoming TV commercial - apparently they do know there's a music scene here after all.
