Jeez, is it Friday already? Seems to be, according to the calendar. Before Rocks Off runs down the rest of the weekend, we're going to put in one last giant plug for Sunday's Houston Press Music Awards showcase, with more than 50 of this year's nominees spread out over 8 venues and 10 stages all across downtown. Don't worry your pretty little heads about walking in the suffocating July heat; SuperShuttle will be on hand to take care of that. Wristbands are $10, available beforehand at Cactus Music and at any of the participating venues the day of the show. Doors open at 4 p.m. Sunday; click here for everything else you could possibly want to know.

Friday Speaking of Cactus Music, local retro-rockers Paris Falls mount the stage for a 5:30 p.m. in-store with tunes from their third self-titled CD.

Shandon Sahm, son of Doug, puts his own spin on his dad's tunes after Houston rockeros (and HPMA nominees) CHango Man at the Continental Club.

Chris Sacco of dUNETX warms up for showcase Sunday with an acoustic set at the Big Top. No cover.

Get exotic at Boondocks with the Wildlife party featuring safari mixes by Richard Gear, Details and the Glasnost boys. Free.

It's gonna get loud: Future Blondes, //Tense//, A Thousand Cranes and DJ Ceeplus Bad Knives peel some paint at Mango's. Free(k).

Saturday

Wish Numbers a happy 31st anniversary tonight at the venerable Westheimer batcave. Tunes that probably had a hand in your conception and all kinds of giveaways too.

Rockabilly keymaster Carl Piano Smith channels the Killer at the Continental's weekly Pachinko Hut matinee on the patio. 2 p.m.

We miss Papermoons already, and now we can miss them again as the twangy indie-folk duo heads out on tour after this show at the Mink with Springfield Riots, Elaine Greer and Bison. Free Amy's ice cream on the patio while it lasts... how sweet is that?

Sunday

We may have mentioned this before, but it's HPMA showcase day. 'Nuff said.
