Tonight: Earl Gilliam Blues Revue (But No Earl) at the Big Easy

BW Headshot - James Fraher photo.jpgHouston-area bluesman Earl Gilliam, who turned 79 Tuesday, was hospitalized earlier this month for a partially collapsed lung. He's home and recovering now, but still unable to perform. However, his birthday show with the Earl Gilliam Blues Revue, originally scheduled for last Friday, will proceed as scheduled tonight minus Gilliam, but with his fellow veteran local bluesmen Sherman Robertson and Texas Johnny Brown sitting in. Some of the proceeds from the door and the tip bucket will go to help offset Gilliam's medical expenses, and he's still scheduled to play the Big Easy next month.

Brown, by the way, will join Little Joe Washington as Houston's ambassadors to New Orleans' Ponderosa Stomp roots-music extravaganza in April.

9 p.m. tonight at the Big Easy, 5731 Kirby, 713-523-9999.
