Saturday Night: Echoes at FBI Rocks

If you say you want the Pink Floyd experience, it generally means you're going to the laser show at the Planetarium, probably with pharmacology of questionable legality. But if you actually want a chance to stand in the audience of a Pink Floyd concert when they ruled the 70s like gods, then seeing Houston's own Echoes is probably as close as you can come.

Focused mostly on the 1971 - 1977 era of Floyd (Meddle, Obscured by Clouds, The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and Animals), Echoes strives for absolute authentic recreation. "Money and fame are not goals for this band," says keyboardist and saxophonist Paul Conroy. "I don't know if we actually have a message except to keep this great music alive. By playing albums in their entirety, we hope to give people a realistic, live Pink Floyd experience."

The band is a rather large affair, with nine full-time members. Recently added to the line-up in order to accurately replicate songs like "Great Gig in the Sky" is a trio of female backup singers led by Kym Smith. Smith has toured as a singer with The Black Crowes, Aerosmith, Oasis and Lenny Kravitz. Her main goal is to become rock and roll's foremost woman of color, wishing to break the stereotypes of black women in modern music. I'd make a joke about tearing down the Wall, but in the current economic situation Rocks Off can only afford nine puns a week. On top of that, Chris Gray has locked all of them in his desk.

Echoes performs Saturday, January 31, at FBI Rocks, 11528 Jones, 281-807-4116.
