Grammy Day at U of H Until 5

Today at the UH Main Campus on Cullen, The Recording Academy and the Grammys are putting on a Career Day for students in the college's music department. The Grammys hold these workshops around the country for students looking to take the leap into the music industry as a full-time gig.
It's like any other career day, except the one's you remember from high school probably didn't have a platinum-selling hip-hop artist as a guest. Houston's own Paul Wall is sitting in on a panel of other music-industry professionals answering questions from students and faculty. Local noise guitarist/producer Dan Workman from Culturcide is moderating.
Culturcide created a stir in 1985 with its Tacky Souvenirs of Pre-Revolutionary America album and manic reworking of pop songs that eviscerated sacred cows like Bruce Springsteen and Michael Jackson. Its take on "We Are the World" ("They Aren't The World," above) skewered the hypocrisy of the blockbuster pop fundraiser. Needless to say, the album created legal troubles.
Hopefully the music lawyers on the panel today can lend their expertise to any young and bright-eyed sampling majors looking to go that route, or at least clue them in on any sweet legal loopholes. Every facet of the music industry is being covered - education, songwriting, broadcasting, scoring films recording.
In these sketchy economic times, the entertainment business is taking a hit, so any expertise a music veteran can give to the students is a godsend. The event lasts until 5 p.m., so shove off early from work and learn something from "The People's Champ" (or at least score a sweet Facebook pic). Word has it that Wall will perform a short set at 4 p.m., along with Lil' Keke and a few area high-schooler garage bands. - Craig Hlavaty
