On December 8, 1980 - 28 years to the day - John Lennon was shot and killed on the steps of the Dakota Apartments on New York City's Upper West Side by professed fan Mark David Chapman. It was a Monday just like today, and millions of people found out when ABC Sports' Howard Cosell broke the news near the end of the New England Patriots-Miami Dolphins Monday Night Football Game.

Lennon's Double Fantasy album had just come out, and " (Just Like) Starting Over" was already in the Top 5. Rocks Off, a few days away from his sixth birthday, was still a little young to be a Lennon/Beatles fan; but he's more than made up for lost time since. After the jump, he rounded up a few of his favorite John songs.

But first, where were you when you heard the news?

"(Just Like) Starting Over"

"Whatever Gets You Through the Night"

"Watching the Wheels"

"Jealous Guy"

"Instant Karma"

"Stand By Me"

"Nobody Told Me"

"Across the Universe," performed by Rufus Wainwright and Sean Lennon

The Beatles, "Come Together"

"Imagine"
