Jenni Rivera's Tough Latin Grammy Luck

Categories: Live Shots

Last night’s Latin Grammys biggest loser was Jenni Rivera - not because she didn’t take home any trophies but because her performances were so dismal. (Amalia Mendoza started spinning in her grave as soon as Rivera hit the first few notes of “Sufriendo a Solas.”) Rivera, who was announced as the queen of banda music, for some reason, decided to tackle a mariachi tune.

Off-key, off-beat, and lacking the vocal power the tune needed, it was a dismal performance. Things only got worse when Rivera’s brother, Lupillo Rivera, joined her onstage for a duet. The final insult was when Jenni Rivera returned to share a song with Olga Tanon and (gasp!) Vikki Carr. Winner of one of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Awards (along with Cheo Feliciano, Astrud Gilberto and Larry Harlow), Carr deserved better.

Stay tuned for more on last night's ceremony throughout the day. - Olivia Flores Alvarez
