Tonight: Tommy Hall Schedule at the Old Quarter in Galveston

When they do the Mount Rushmore of Texas rock, they’ll need a huge section of mountain right in the middle for the Thirteenth Floor Elevators. Histories of the legendary Austin band credit jug player Tommy Hall with putting the band together. An early student/proponent of LSD and other mind altering drugs, Hall now lives in San Francisco and continues to this day to drop acid and write in his journals about its effects on his brain and life. Austinite Fred Mitchim was an early friend of the band, he now fronts the premier Elevators cover band in the country, the mysteriously named Tommy Hall Schedule. According to those who knew him, Hall was once asked how often he dropped acid and he said “at ten, two, and four, just like Dr. Pepper.”

Whatever the truth of that may be, Mitchim and his guys bring such a high level of authenticity to the Elevators' music that four years ago, when the band opened for Sumner Erickson’s regrouped Elevators, the Schedule literally brought the house down by opening with a stunning eight-minute rendition of Elevators classic “Slip Inside This House” that was so perfect it sounded like 1965 again.

The Elevators were always strong in Galveston, where they were an integral part of the surfer scene, so their return to the Old Quarter should bring out any number of graying heads. - William Michael Smith
