Turning the Screw: Ozone Awards, Destiny's Child, Soulja Boy, K-Fed and More

Mon Jul 21, 2008 at 10:28:32 AM

Welcome to Turning the Screw, Rocks Off's weekly rap post. From here on out, we'll attempt to bring you new music, news and other tidbits related (at least somewhat) to rap and hip-hop. Look for it Mondays around noon. It probably won’t rhyme, at least most of the time. E-mail tips to introducingliston@gmail.com. Thanks, homies.

Local Single of the Week: Sy Smith's "Fly Away (Remix feat. Kay of the Foundation)"

Wire to Wire:

Ozone Magazine announced the nominees for its annual awards show, scheduled for August 8-11 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Several Houston artists made the ballot, including (but not limited to) Bun B (too many categories to list), Pimp C (Tastemaker Award), Trae (Mixtape Monster Award), and Z-Ro (Most Likely To Stab Someone During The Show). Attention, Z-Ro: We. Are. Kidding.

Kelly Rowland says Destiny's Child are still "like sisters" and thus will be having a family reunion in the studio soon...

And they said Soulja Boy had no sense of history...

Puff Daddy’s show got an Emmy Nomination and The Wire didn’t? Ugh.

We’re not really big fans of Memphis’s Kia Shine, but we’ll side with him here in his beef with Three 6 Mafia if for no other reason than because "Lolli, Lolli" is terrible.

Let us get this straight: Barack Obama is not a terrorist? Whoops.

Vibe magazine will finally settle the Best Rapper Alive debate. We’ve got our money on K-Fed. It’s a lock, baby.

We hadn’t planned on voting, but now that we know Kanye and the Pussycat Dolls' Nicole Scherzinger will, well, that changes everything.

Bow Wow, headed for the Verizon August 8, does not have beef with Omarion. Or clear skin.

Three CDs out tomorrow you otherwise never would’ve heard of (but are available on amazon.com nonetheless):

Hell Rell, Black Mask, Black Gloves

Misled Children, People's Market

Mr. Hyde, Chronicles Of The Beast Man - Shea Serrano

Just happy to see that there is going to be a weekly segment on rap/hip-hop. Keep up the good work!

Jo Jo, I forgot to mention that anyone that comments on one of the weekly rap/hip-hop posts must end said comment with some type of slick rap outro, like "Later, homies" or "Bling, Bling." Thanks. Bling, bling.
