A Blast From Calexico's Past Blasts Into Space

Categories: Mp3s

Space, the final frontier, will be transformed into Calexico's "Crystal Frontier" Friday morning. Astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle will be shaken from their slumber to the mariachi-rock of the Widescreen Remix of Calexico's classic cut from their 2001 EP Even My Sure Things Fall Through.

And to celebrate, the Arizona band is giving "Crystal Frontier" away. More info and the mp3 download after the jump...

Here's what Calexico's label Quarterstick / Touch and Go had to say about Calexico's breaking of the surly bonds of Earth:

On May 31st, the Space Shuttle Discovery took off toward the International Space station, carrying Commander Mark Kelly on his third flight into space. During shuttle flights, friends and family of astronauts are allowed to choose the music that is played to wake up the pilots from sleep in space. His wife, Gabrielle Giffords, a U.S. representative from Arizona's 8th Congressional District, has chosen songs to wake the crew on two days. One day will be the bugle call Kelly used to wake up to when he went to college at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and the other - CALEXICO! Their song, "Crystal Frontier," will be beamed into space, and waking up the astronauts! Come on - it's pretty exciting.

Indeed it is. To me, no song this decade is more deserving of this singular honor. Almost exactly seven years ago, I wrote a whole article about it, on the occasion of a Calexico date at Rudyard's.

If I was grading this mp3, I'd give it a 100. I love everything about it -- the timely lyrics that always remind me of a Friday night in Matamoros / Brownsville, Joey Burns's Lee Hazlewood-esque vocals, John Convertino's crisp drums, the layered acoustic guitars, the trumpet flourishes -- it's the perfect single, and it should have been a hit.

It wasn't, but it gets to go to space, and as nothing coughed up by Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit or Fergie will ever have that honor, there is some justice in the world after all. -- John Nova Lomax
