The past: The New York Dolls, along with Iggy Pop and the Stooges and MC5, are credited as the godfathers of punk rock. The original line-up formed in 1971 and played its first show on Christmas Eve at a homeless shelter. The band broke up in 1975. In 2004, Morrissey organized a reunion of the three surviving band members, frontman David Johansen, guitarist Sylvain Sylvain and bassist Arthur Kane, who died that same year. In 2006, they reformed yet again and released a new album, One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This.

John Lomax says:

Johnny Thunders died 17 years ago today.

Festus says:

Here's hoping the Dolls come to Houston soon. I've caught some footage of them playing live recently, and David & Syl don't look like they've missed a beat. Incredibly talented musicians that have a great deal of fun doing what they know best.

Linda says:

I love the Dolls and the Stooges, but I'd say (as would others) that Lou Reed is the unofficial godfather of punk. He'd say so, too (see Brett Koshkin's coverage of Reed's appearance at this year's SXSW: http://blogs.houstonpress.com/rocks/2008/03/sxsw_lou_reed_live_for_one_son.php).

Not that it matters all *that* much. They're all great!

chris gray says:

Isn't this just rubbing it in a bit that they didn't come here? Although, honestly, I saw some of their SXSW set a few years back and, unless they've improved mightily, we didn't miss much.
