SXSW: Stomping my feet to British Sea Power

Categories: SXSW

The Village Voice Media party gave me plenty of reasons to stick around La Zona Reasons (i.e. free drinks, free food and The Black Keys) but I finally headed out to see British Sea Power at Mohawk.

The sound check seemed to take forever, especially after more than a few free drinks and the Texas heat (that’s right, even those of us who live here complain about it occasionally). I stayed cool with a free pistachio popsicle from somewhere – guess that marketing campaign didn’t work. Finally, the sextet took the stage and soon I forgot about the heat and just wanted to hear as much Dylan-esque, Brit rock as I could stomp my feet to. BSP played mostly from its latest release Do You Like Rock Music?, which was nice.

The show made me not feel so bad for skipping out on chance to see Houston’s The Mathletes out east of I-35 with some friends and the current director of "Speeding Motorcycle" (the musical based off Daniel Johnston lyrics and featuring frontman Joe Mathlete). By the way, that show plays in Austin tonight and Saturday at the Zach Scott Theatre on 1510 Toomey Road. I recommend checking it out if you having nothing to do until after 10 p.m.

I on the other hand have plenty of my plate for the evening. Tonight I’ll be regularly stopping by Esther’s Follies and The Velveeta Room for the comedy showcase featuring Brian Posehn (Comedians of Comedy), the guys from Human Giant, Janeane Garofalo, Eugene Mirman and Matt Braunger. I’ll also see '70s fuzz, soul rockers The Black Hollies and abstract hip-hoppers Dalek.
