Drenched In Blog: Sir Mick's Greatest "Hits"

This week, Sir Mick Jagger, the guy that sings in the Rolling Stones, released a compilation of his solo hits. Calling these songs “hits” is a stretch in the most sincere form. You could call it more of an album of tracks that Keef shot down during sessions. He probably produced a switchblade and said something like “Rumma-zizzma-flan,” and that was the end of the conversation.

Going into listening, I expected the worst. I knew I’d have to hear cheesed out and warmed over ‘80s rock-pop that Mick did so adequately between middling Stones albums like Undercover and Dirty Work. I understood I’d have to hear that monstrous “Dancing in the Streets” cover he did with Bowie, tossed off no doubt in a flurry of neon fabric and amyl nitrates. What I got instead was an interesting collection of tracks he did with guys like Lenny Kravitz, Dave Stewart and some weird shit with Bono. “Too Many Cooks” he did with John Lennon and Harry Nilsson in 1973, during J-Len’s lost 18 months away from Yoko.

I didn’t know he recorded with Peter Tosh. I know he did some production work with him, back in the late 70’s white reggae fad all the British blues guys went through. My favorite here is “Memo from Turner” the song he recorded for the Performance soundtrack. It’s a shame it never made it onto any proper Stones albums. It would have fit in all too well on Sticky Fingers.

Here, deal with this video. I’m not apologizing, either. The way they jump out of nowhere and come at the screen menacing us with dance, like it’s threatening us, is so precious. I enjoy it in the same way I get pleasure from car crashes, bum fights and To Catch a Predator. You should too. – Craig Hlavaty
