Drenched In Blog: Just Can’t Quit You Baby

Former Honeydrippers frontman Robert Plant and frequent Diddy/David Coverdale collaborator Jimmy Page have decided to reform their earlier group, Led Zeppelin; you may remember their music from several car commercials and films. The one-off set, scheduled for November 26 at London’s O2 arena with Pete Townshend, Bill Wyman & the Rhythm Kings, Foreigner and possibly Mick Jagger also set to perform, is a tribute concert for Atlantic Records founder and music-industry monolith Ahmet Ertegun, who passed away last December.

Achieving modest success in the late ‘60s to late ‘70s, Led Zeppelin played a distinctive brand of blues-rock that captivated a cult audience. They sold moderately well, touring with the likes of Iron Butterfly and Rick Derringer. They released a handful of well-received albums, including Presence and In Through the Out Door. Jimmy Page later found greater fame with Coverdale/Page, and Plant went on to become a powerhouse solo artist, including a stint in ‘80s supergroup The Honeydrippers. Zeppelin influenced scores of subsequent bands, including Great White, Collective Soul and Creed, to name a few.

Page, Plant and occasional R.E.M./Butthole Surfers producer John Paul Jones will be joined by Jason Bonham, son of deceased original drummer John Bonham, who also played drums at their last reunion, an Atlantic Records event in 1988. No way on earth will this show sell out. Proceeds benefit the Ahmet Ertegun Education Fund.

This is Jimmy Page and Diddy, back when he was still Puff Daddy, with their collaboration from 1998’s critically acclaimed Godzilla soundtrack. I think the song they sample is from Led Zeppelin, but can’t be sure. – Craig Hlavaty
