Drenched In Blog: The Humpty Blog

Digital Underground, who bounces into Scout Bar tonight, is sort of like Public Enemy plus Funkadelic, minus all the Jew-hating and Elvis-bashing (see yesterday’s blog for that). Many people only know them from 1990 hit single “The Humpty Dance,” from the album Sex Packets, regularly heard at wedding receptions and corporate functions nationwide. I myself had the pleasure of watching my parents drunkenly bump and grind to this song at an anniversary party once – like witnessing my conception, but from the outside. Good times.

In 1991, DE played themselves in the Dan Aykroyd garbage-dump farce Nothing But Trouble, co-starring Chevy Chase, Demi Moore and John Candy. It follows a bunch of yuppie trash stuck in a ghost town populated by sadistic bumpkins; one of those movies you waste two hours on one Saturday afternoon without ever knowing why. But you gotta love a flick with a Mr. Bonestripper, diapered trolls and John Candy in drag.

Anyhow, this is DE’s performance from the film. That is indeed Tupac singing backup.

(And yes, I’m pretty sure Aykroyd’s nose is supposed to look like a penis.) -- Craig Hlavaty

Digital Underground umpties 9 p.m. tonight at Scout Bar, 18307 Egret Bay Blvd., Clear Lake, 281-335-0002.
