Wait a minute ...

There was a curious phrase in a USA Today report of the Nielsen BDS, Arbitron and Radio & Records. It's just a blurb, but it speaks volumes if you read between the lines a little. First, Akon's "Don't Matter" from his Konviction CD is still in the No. 1 spot, where it's been now for six weeks. Along with Akon, the top ten include songs by Timbaland, Fergie, Gwen Stefani, R. Kelly (isn't he in jail?), Bow Wow, Diddy, Ne-Yo, Gym Class Heroes, Ciara and T-Pain.

It's T-Pain's "Buy U a Drank" that the report says "should take over the top spot next week." Hold up, that doesn't sound like a prediction, that sounds like a report. Instead of the delicately worded "seems poised to take over the top spot," or "will likely reach number one," USA Today just says, "Yep, it should get there by next week." No mystery, no chance of an alternate outcome. Isn't radio play determined by individual program directors, DJs and audience requests? What if a bunch of radio programmers and a bunch of DJs decided to play something else? What if mass numbers of listeners started requesting something else? Wouldn't that impact next week's report? Sounds like a 'no.'

Oh well, I wonder if they can tell us what will be popular at Christmas time? I like to get my shopping done early.
