Summer of Johnny II: Johnny Football Goes to Hollywood

We're hoping it's one of those work hard play hard type of things.
"Suspect intangibles -- not a leader by example or known to inspire by his words. Carries a sense of entitlement and prima-donna arrogance seeking out the bright lights of Hollywood. Is known to party too much and is drawn to all the trappings of the game. ... Has defied the odds and proven to be a great college-system quarterback, but still must prove he is willing to work to be great, adjust his hard-partying, Hollywood lifestyle and be able to inspire his teammates by more than his playmaking ability." -- Nolan Nawrocki, pre-draft scouting report on Johnny Manziel

Hey, maybe Nolan Nawrocki was onto something.

Back in March, when the NFL.com (formerly Pro Football Weekly) draft scout/judgmental curmudgeon issued his assessment of Johnny Manziel, many of us chuckled and called Nawrocki a sensationalist, thirsty for web hits.

And that he may be!

However, it doesn't make Nawrocki's Manziel scouting report any retroactively less (and somewhat humorously) accurate.

Like a few dozen other rookies (including Jadeveon Clowney and Tom Savage of the Houston Texans), Manziel was in southern California this weekend for the NFL's Rookie Premiere, a three-day event that as best I can tell is a confluence of marketing, media sessions, and some, ahem, down time.

(Side bar: The best quote from a rookie at the event came from Raiders first round draft choice Khalil Mack, who obliterated any future he might have in personnel or scouting with his assessment of Matt Schaub: "Oh man, he's poised. You can tell a great quarterback when you see one. He's the real deal.".....um....)

(Still laughing at Mack....hang on....)

(Still laughing....)

(Ok, done.....almost....)

(Ok, NOW I'm done.)

That's where Johnny Football comes in. At the "down time" part.

Thanks to TMZ (which should just stand for "The Manziel Zone" at this point), we caught a glimpse of young Mr. Football stepping out into the Hollywood nightlife, succumbing to the very temptation about which the prescient Mr. Nawrocki warned us. INCREDIBLE!

Here is young Jonathan Football getting out of a car outside a trendy Hollywood spot called the Warwick on the Sunset Strip, where he subsequently hung out with party goers including his rapper pal, Drake....

And now here is the venerable Señor Football, leaving the club and getting in a much different vehicle with a gaggle of very voluptuous females....

Well, if all you haters out there were trying to keep Johnny Manziel's "Johnny Football" persona suppressed by castigating him for his trip to Vegas to hang out with Gronk, clearly that tactic has backfired. If anything, the Force flows stronger through him now than ever before, for now Johnny Manziel is in the wild with even more cachet, a legal I.D., and his own money in his pocket.

Certainly, at some point, we will begin dissecting his on-the-field game. His offensive coordinator, Kyle Shanahan, tried to take us that direction this weekend, comparing Manziel to Robert Griffin III.

Nope. Nice try, though, Kyle. Indeed, the day to discuss Johnny Manziel, the football player will come.

Today, though, is not that day.
