NRA doesn't think open carry protests are the right way to go.
Updated 9:45 a.m. This post was updated to reflect news of an NRA rebound on the matter when they apologized and said they do support the open carry movement.

It's not only us normal folk who find it odd when open carry nuts walk into a coffee shop with AKs and rifles and such swinging from the shoulder. The NRA has also recently backed-off any cosign of these tactics. Then, abruptly, they blamed a misguided staffer for letting his opinion get in the way---and the organization issued an apology.

The gun right's organization leader Chris Cox told the groups news service that it was an issue of "tactics" and a that an alert that dissed the open-carry protests in Texas was out of pocket. And here we thought the right-wing NRA folks were simply not down with rifle carrying groups rolling into crowded areas in a show of defiance to Texas open-carry law.

The statement which went out last week said "Using guns merely to draw attention to yourself in public not only defies common sense, it shows a lack of consideration and manners. That's not the Texas way."

Of course, that's all moot now. And so is the Open Carry Texas' beef as well (we assume). According to an earlier report in the Associated Press.

[I]n a statement posted on its Facebook page, Open Carry Texas criticized the NRA, saying if the group doesn't retract its comments, Open Carry will have to withdraw its full support for the NRA.

"It is unfortunate that an organization that claims to be dedicated to the preservation of gun rights would attack another organization fighting so hard for those rights in Texas," Open Carry Texas said. "The more the NRA continues to divide its members by attacking some aspects of gun rights instead of supporting all gun rights, the more support it will lose."
