The message went out at 5:01 p.m. on Fort Hood's Twitter account: "All personnel on post are asked to shelter in place."

The message was re-tweeted more than 1,800 times and by then news spread that the army installation in Killeen had seen another deadly shooting.

Three people are dead and 16 injured, after an Iraq war veteran went on a rampage yesterday afternoon with a .45 caliber handgun. The shooter, identified in reports as Ivan Lopez, killed himself after a standoff later with military police.

Lopez, 34, was married with two children. While military officials didn't officially identify Lopez, they did say the gunman was at the military base undergoing mental health treatment.

"He was undergoing behavior health and psychiatric treatment for depression and anxiety, and a variety of other psychological and psychiatric issues," base commander Lt. Gen. Mark Milley told reporters.

"There are reports the he self-reported a traumatic brain injury previously coming back from Iraq," Milley said.

Lopez served 4 months in Iraq in 2011, according to reports.

Doctors said the injuries ranged from mild to superficial to life threatening, and two people went into surgery last night. Three people were in critical condition with five in serious to fair condition, according to doctors.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry who ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff in honor of the victims issued a statement shortly after the tragedy:

"Today, Ft. Hood was once again stricken by tragedy. As Texans, our first priority must be caring for the victims and their families. Ft. Hood has proven its resilience before, and will again. Texas will support those efforts in any way we can, with any resources necessary. The thoughts and prayers of all Texans are with everyone affected by this tragedy."

The FBI is investigating the shooting.
