The Legend of Wendy Davis: Separating Fact from Fiction

192px-Wendy_Davis2013.jpeg
Not that extraordinary.

"Print the legend!" This is how Jeff Davis, ex-husband to Texas Democratic gubernatorial candidate and rising star in Democratic circles, responded ("with palpable weariness") to a New York Times reporter who was trying to get to the bottom of what's really the truth about Wendy Davis's biography.

And why is the Times, following up on a story in the Dallas Morning-News questioning the details of Davis's bio (on which more in a moment), also trying to sort out the details: because Davis is largely running on her bio. The campaign bio, the picture of Wendy Davis that the political handlers have packaged for you, is this:

"When I was a single mom living in a small trailer home, I had to make some tough choices to give my daughter a better life. I worked hard to put myself through Tarrant [County] College and later Harvard Law School because my daughters were counting on me."

Here's the thing: this isn't quite true. What actually happened is this: a young Wendy Davis (then Underwood) -- who didn't live in a trailer as long as she has stated -- met a wealthy lawyer (Jeff Davis), who was 14 years older than her, who paid for her to go to TCU (undergrad) and Harvard Law School. And, for the vast majority of her three years of law school, her daughters lived in Texas and Davis sporadically visited them (all have differing accounts of exactly how often she came back). Shortly after she moved back to Texas, Harvard law degree in hand, she divorced Jeff Davis (they rarely speak anymore). Davis is now dating ex-Austin mayor Will Wynn.

In other words, Davis's bio doesn't stand up to scrutiny any more than Marco Rubio's tales of his family escaping Castro's communism. And if you're giving her a pass, the only reason why you're doing so is because she's a Democrat and so are you. If she was a conservative candidate, you'd be attacking her for her campaign spin.

What a Cinderella story.

While I do lean left, I don't consider myself a liberal or "libtard" and I don't consider myself a Democrat or "Democrap." I've voted on both sides of the aisle in the past. However, there's not a chance in fucking hell that I'll ever vote for any member of the Texas GOP. Any GOP member these days, actually.

Greg Abbott is still pretending to be a paraplegic. That old bigoted homophobe won't release his medical records.

I'm voting for her. Women deserve basic rights when it comes to their health.

That being said, she is the candidate that supports public education - Mr. Abbott doesn't even discuss it on his website, since he has no plans to support our public education system in our state! She will still have my vote!

this is one of the worst articles ever written in the Houston Press. So married couples shouldn't help each other? And god forbid she only stayed a few months in a trailer home. I wonder if Rick Perry has ever even been to one. I think all politicians fold to the politics of their time. But people have so little to attack her with her trailer and degree are the best they got. Houston Press you should be better than this.

It's sad that she wasn't honest but it's wrong to say her bio is her appeal. The more different from rick perry the better. And she's better looking....

What further harms Davis is those Texans who are old enough to remember the Lena Guerrero flap.  Fudging on one's resume isn't kosher.

Wow! Best political piece I've seen in the HP in a very long time. Glad to see someone in the media isnt just giving her a free pass with her obvious hypocrisy.

I can't find the article at the moment, but the Free Press Houston had a good article about the other women involved in the filibuster who have not received much attention from the media. If those other women were held up as high as Wendy Davis, we might not be in a position where Democrats have to accept a watered-down liberal for their candidate for Governor.

A basic right would not include a medical facility that has to stand up to the same scrutiny as any other "surgical" facility?   She fought against limiting late term (after 20 weeks) abortion and making these clinics adhere to standards the same as any other medical facility.  She lied about her history and she lied about the law she filibustered against.  Never, ever would a medically necessary abortion be performed at a clinic, all are done in hospitals...just think about it for a minute.

One issue is more important than proof of dishonesty?  Wow, just wow.

She claimed to have been a single mom living in a trailer and putting herself through law school when in reality, she was single for a very short time and her husband kept her children and put her through law school.  She claims to understand the plight of a single mother based on this but she has no clue.  She was not out on her own finding a way to feed her children, before she got married, she lived with other family members.  There is nothing wrong with family helping, but don't lie about it.  There are those of us who truly did raise daughters in a trailer, on their own, and who weren't lucky enough to find a rich sugar-daddy to take care of everything including the children she abandoned.  Ask her who has custody right now...

No, they shouldn't lie about it.

No, she must be lying because her story wasn't true.

@sailor_k So far, all I've seen from Abbott is Guns 'n God. I have no need for either.
