Weather Week: Ready or Not, Here Comes the Cold Weather
In Houston, the most important routine check-up you do for your home every year is the one that makes sure your air conditioning works every spring. If there is one thing you don't want, it's a broken a/c unit come June. This is the opposite of our northern neighbors, who worry about those first frigid days of winter and how well their heaters will function. For the first time this year, Houstonians will share that concern as the air turns bitingly cold beginning today just after lunch.
Our first major cold front of the season should move through the area by around noon followed by a precipitous drop in temperatures and windy conditions throughout the afternoon. Overnight, temperatures will fall all the way into the 30s. Areas north and west of the city should have their first freeze since last winter.
Those cold temps should persist through Wednesday with highs only in the mid to upper 50s on Wednesday and lows back down into the upper 30s for most of the area. As the week presses on, temperatures will grow milder and reach the mid 70s by the weekend before another approaching front next week. Like they say, "If you don't like the weather in Texas, just wait."
One word of warning: If you have not had your heater checked this year, this is something you absolutely should do, particularly if it is a gas furnace. Not only will it keep you warm, but it will keep you from costly repairs and, more important, prevent your house from burning down. Bonus!
