Hoot!
Everyone in Houston knows those kids at Rice are a smart lot. Sure, Valhalla might have a weird dress code issue, but otherwise, it's a nice place with a lot of generally intelligent people. So it should come as no surprise that Rice University made Lumosity's list of the smartest colleges in America.

What might surprise you is not just that they ranked (they made No. 7), but how high and who they beat in the process.

But before we get to praising Rice more than it deserves, it should be noted that Lumosity is a neuroscience research company. This is their second such list and it was based on game play data from over 72,000 college students who played Lumosity games designed to "challenge five cognitive areas: memory, processing speed, flexibility, attention and problem solving," according to a release.

Still, the names on the list are familiar and would seem to represent collegiate intellect fairly, and they do appear to be in line with many lists of the top schools in America, lending the study some legitimacy.

Rice was beat out by places like MIT, Princeton, Northwestern and Carnegie Melon. No shame there. But what was interesting was that Rice placed above Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Stanford and Georgetown, among others. That's some pretty rarefied air, but Rice does consistently rank as one of the best universities in America.

If you started reading this and wondered, "Well, I wasn't nerdy enough to go to Rice, but where does my Texas college rank?" Funny you should ask. There was only one other Texas school in the top 50. That was UT Austin at No. 47. Rounding out the other schools in the top 100 were Baylor (No. 78), SMU (No. 92) and Texas A&M (No. 96). Is it possible Johnny Football pulled the curve down?

University of Houston may be a crosstown rival in sports, but no one would confuse its academics with Rice's. But UH did manage to get inside the top 150 at No. 138. Go Coogs?

You missed the third ranked Texas school.  Trinity University is in at #51.
