Weekend Weather: A Change Is Gonna Come

This is why Texas is largely safe from tropical weather this time of year.
Normally, if there were a 60-mph tropical storm spinning in the Gulf of Mexico, most of us would be breaking down the doors of H-E-B to grab bottled water we'd still have two years later. Buying up all the bottled water during a storm in a big city is a little like bringing clean sheets and hot water to a birthing. No one is totally sure of the reason, but YOU JUST DO IT!

Fortunately, Tropical Storm Karen will have little to no impact on the Texas coastline thanks to a strong cold front that should move through the area Saturday. And, yes, I said cold (for us non-Yankees anyway).

During this time of year, as the first cool fronts move through, storms like Karen are steered east and away from us. It's one of the great benefits of living this far west along the Gulf. But more important, it's about to get really nice outside.

Today and part of the day on Saturday, it's going to be muggy and warm, basically a repeat of the last week. By later in the day Saturday to early evening, this fairly strong front for this time of year will approach the Houston area bringing the chance of some rain. It doesn't look like it will be a significant rainmaker, but showers and thunderstorms shouldn't be all that surprising if they occur.

By Sunday, it will feel a whole lot different. Cool air will flow into Houston and humidity will drop. The high for Sunday is expected to be in the upper 70s and the low will be in the LOWER 50s. For people in these parts, that's darn chilly. The early part of next week will be absolutely gorgeous with low humidity, highs in the low 80s and lows in the 50s, so no one is going to begrudge you if you take a little "shutdown" of your own.

It will gradually warm up next week, but let's not worry about that right now. Just enjoy the coming autumn weather.
