We Ask, You Respond: What Should Happen to the Astrodome?

The clock is ticking for the Astrodome. On June 10, the deadline for private companies to submit their financially sound ideas for the Dome will hit. On June 25, the HCSCC will present Harris County Commissioners Court with the ideas. At that point, decisions will be made, votes will be cast and we'll finally know what the future holds for the Eighth Wonder of the World.

By now it feels like everyone has had their say about what we should do with the Dome. Even us, the humble folks at Hair Balls, have put in our two cents. With the deadline for proposals inching closer by the day, we realized something:

We hadn't asked you what you would do with the Dome.

Thanks to the magic of Twitter and crowdsourcing, we were able to get your thoughts on what the future of the dome should be. Some of them are reasonable, but others are downright bizarre. We rounded up our favorites, and hey, maybe one of them will come to pass.

And just so you know: Not a one of you suggested turning it into a parking garage. Good show.

But where will we get a truck big enough to haul it around?
Why ya gotta be so mean?
Credible... or incredible?
Solid idea, but we can already hear the arguments about who should be part of the statue.

How about something that makes the city of Houston some money so they can stop coming up with redundant ordinances just for the sake of making money?

I have some good memories in the old Astrodome...mostly high school football state championship games.

Why not have your cake and eat it too. It is multi story. The rodeo says they need a new arena. The Texans need more parking. We want a green space. A museum about the dome would be great. Why not turn the top floor into a huge green space like discovery green. With real trees a water feature. A biosphere. Below that put your arena, parking and a museum. It would generate revenue if you charged a small fee to visit the museum and spend time at the park. You could put restaurants in there maybe even have a ride or two. This would attract people and give us a leg up on future events like the superbowl which definitely generates revenue.

Let's have a forward-thinking approach to this.  First, we need to vote for legalized gambling in this state.  If they can turn the venue where I saw the Rolling Stones into a mega-church, anything is possible.  I recommend the dome be transformed into the First Baptist Casino Church.  How bout them apples?  Oh, if you would prefer a Roman Catholic theme, the pit boss & casino personnel could don various religious threads & play the part.

Can we sell it some other state or country to use as a tourist attraction like the London Bridge? (No, not the Fergie song)

Nothing WILL happen to it if it requires public funding.... NOTHING!

Tear it down...BUT, before you do, gut it and sell everything. Every little piece that is remotely collectable, (light panels, seats, signs, urinals, etc) auction off. Use the money raised for charity and to help offset the costs of demolition to taxpayers.

And then....host the concert to end all concerts there. Wiilie Nelson, ZZ Top, George Strait, Geto Boys, Destiny's Child, etc.....Use the proceeds to pay for demolition costs and to build a Houston sports musuem.

Push for casino gambling and make it the largest casino in the world. Or make it a memorial for firefighters and police, with parking garage underneath.functional and preserving Houstons heritage

Tear it down & build an outdoor concert stage like the Woodlands Pavilion. Then we won't have to drive that far North anymore, and it will give Reliant employees more hours :)

Without enough information to produce an opinion, I wonder: Why was a new stadium built instead of renovating the Dome? Seems to me that since A. BECAUSE the dome's replacement is long built and in use, and B. the Dome has been allowed to deteriorate and is now just taking up space to the point it is inhibiting growth of the HLSR, there's only one reasonable option, which is calling in the good folks at Cherry Cos. Finding an actual functional use for an older stadium sitting right next to a new one is a problem that would have best hammered out years ago.

Tear it down to the frame and make a shaded monument park area that can handle more Texans tailgating.

How about one of largest indoor athletic recretion places in the world !

make it homeless shelter. then once its packed full of homeless people, demolish it. the homeless population is reduced and so is the building. problem solved.

Whatever becomes of it, people should be coming to Houston just to see it/ see what has replaced it. Houston is one of the biggest cities in this country and yet we have no attractions that people come to see that really set us apart from other cities. No one wants to vacation here, people would rather take weekend trips to Austin,New Braunfels, and San Antonio because there's actually things to do there besides museums and shopping. It's shocking leaving Texas and realizing that no one even realizes Houston is a huge city with a great culinary, art, and music scene. People come here to do business, visit the rodeo once a year and leave. That needs to change! Transform it, use the materials to build something else, do something productive with the thing rather than let it sit there rotting away like the hundreds of other old buildings across the city that make it an eye sore for visitors. Make it something that brings people IN!

I think we should tear it down and make it a park. You pay for parking in the complex and use it for family cookouts, tailgating, etc.

plan B: Convert it into a sound stage for movie production companies and get us back on the map for major films.

bon fire. :) most people don't grasp the concept that the dome has a maintenance cost...open or closed, but more so open. And that whatever is done with it has to cover those costs. If it can't be a thriving business, it should go away.

Raffle tickets off to push the demo button. Easily could pay for the demolition that way. People from around the world would buy tickets in hopes of being the winner.

Hotel/Casino...why the fuck are we sending all our money to Louisiana..I mean 90% LA is here know (thanks Katrina and Bill White you assholes) so keep those cunts money here instead of sending it back. I suggest we do this quick before DHS turns it into a FEMA camp ;-)

Tear down Reliant arena and put parking there. Make the dome a multi-use facility for concerts, graduation, conventions, etc. Texans could use it for training camp and would easily draw 10,000 per practice.

@Foolio Not a bad idea, I know I'd buy a seat or something.
